The Chinese films victimize women. They fall victim of love and desperation. In the film Shanghai Baby (1999), the lead actor is caught in a love triangle. She falls in love with two men of different characters and personalities. The film indicates the desperate nature of women in the culture. Women are presented in romantic films. They play a central role in romantic movies. The limited roles of women in films signify the male dominated industry. However the love triangles are centers towards the female.

The female are seen as being desperate given the fact that in the movie Shanghai Baby (1999), the female character presents herself as desperate for love. The community in which the movies is set accepts the females to operate in a more decent and ethical manner. The evil in society was a communal concern. In the film, the actress is portrayed as a victim of love. The desperation portrayed by the actor represents the cultural perception on females. The moral aspects are presented in the Chinese films.

The male population is portrayed as holding high moral components compared to their female components. In the film Shanghai Baby (1999), the male characters are loyal to one female lover while on the other hand the female characters are seen as immoral. This is portrayed by the fact that the leading actress is dates to mean and it is evident that she does so in her own pleasure rather than love. The movie represents the nature in which the women are portrayed in Chinese movies. On the other hand the male take positive roles in movies while the females undertake roles that undermine the ethical aspects of a given community.

The immoral natures of the females in these movies are an illustration of the women role in Chinese female industry in the end of the 20th century. The Chinese film industry during the early century was used as a propaganda tool. The communist used film to sell their manifesto to the public and the world. In the film Yellow Earth
