Many children today, envisioning a life without technological gadgets is like living in the senior generation, and it is difficult for kids to imagine living in the aged generation. This is because technology has eased all aspects of life. However, in spite of increased use of technology among children, technology has both positive and negative influences which if not observed well, can lead to immorality all over the modern children. It is therefore because of this reason that this study is aimed at discussing influences of modern technology on the children development (Internet, cell phones, TV). Technology refers to advancement in scientific knowledge utilized for practical purposes, mainly in industry. Modern technology is usually accredited to the Internet, cell phone, computers and television among others. The entire above mentioned are summarized as a civilization that is swift, communication rich, information and on the screen. For that reason, it is difficult for children today to imagine a life without computers, the Internet and cell phones. Numerous researchers have, thus, differed concerning the effects of technology on the growth of the contemporary kids (Gross, 2011). Some believe that technology is the advanced level of human life while others contend that technology has diverse effects on brain development. Albeit these contentions, technological advancement has its demerits as children are doing more of listening, watching and surfing devoid of guidance from their parents. All the above-mentioned devices are taken for granted by numerous people, specifically kids. Proponents of modern engineering argue that the present technical advancement has made the world a global village. This is because information is swiftly passed from one place to another. In the late 1940s, the introduction of television made sure that individuals did not get ay delays in getting information within a short period. The information could be visual and written. According to Annual Review of Sociology, “cell phone or mobile phones ease the communication and assure receipt of instantaneous feedback” among other things (Gross, 2011). On the downfall, the link between children and their parents are disconnected through the discovery of technology. This hinders the knowledge and values passed by parents to their children. In fact, most kids are exposed to technology and would think the world would be at a standstill without technology (Plowman, McPake & Stephen, 2010). Although the advantages appear interesting, the disadvantages are very chronic to both corporeal and intellectual development. This is to say that “technology confines ingenuity, affects the cognitive, incarnate, ethical and behavioral performances, attributes and childrens development”. Technology affects the growth of a child from the moment the child is born. This is why doctors recommend six-month breast-feeding after the birth of a child so that the child may enjoy the colostrums rich in antibodies that boost the child’s immunity and help in growth. Nonetheless, through technology, women watch ads that misinform mothers to use powdered milk instead of breast milk. The effectiveness of the powder is questionable since it may serve the same purpose as breast milk though ineffectively. Furthermore, during breast-feeding, a bond is created between mother and the child, which is a phenomenon that lacks when contemporary skill is embraced (Plowman, McPake & Stephen, 2010). In normal cases, children grow up and become playful and during this stage, they experience things that most kids like doing. Modern technology “hinders kids from such experiences since the contemporary kid will prefer using gargets like toys” (Plowman, McPake & Stephen, 2010). According to Plowman, McPake & Stephen, “gadgets like video games” make children not to utilize their time properly as they waste time playing video games, thus, failing to recall going out to play with other kids (Plowman, McPake & Stephen, 2010). Most kids in the present time prefer surfing the internet, watching TV, and playing video games. Such acts impair their capability to exercise, and this adds to commonness of obesity. Moreover, nearly all kids while watching TV tend to eat junk food that is unhealthy, unlike previous generation children who engaged themselves in artistic games and many of these children did not get hypertension issues because of overweight. Due to contemporary technology, children are living unhealthy and reduced life expectancy. Critical reasoning, lack of concentration and attention span of many children appears damaged by the modern technology. Most kids are not creative since all the information required is on hand in the internet. Plowman, McPake & Stephen (2010) portend that this makes many kids “unable to solve complex and focus on widespread literature attainable on-line” (Plowman, McPake & Stephen, 2010). Conversely, the Internet introduces kids to social networks that help kids share materials and favorite books on-line. This kind of link or association enables children to share a lot of information, hence making informed decisions and arguments. However, they may as well meet black-hearted friends since they add friends that are not known to them. Besides, children are at the risk of finding themselves in the snarl of people with dreadful intentions, thereby, leading to immorality. Prior to modern technology, the circle of friends was limited to clear intentions since even the parents knew friends. The consequences of bad relationships encouraged by technology lead to getting children who begin courtship at a tender age, thus, leading to STIs, low self-esteem, unplanned pregnancy and HIV. “The usual norms, language, values that were passed from one generation to another have been weakened by modern technology” (Gross, 2011). For example, in African setting the accustomed culture is disappearing because of technology, therefore, making children to lack the fundamental cultural aspects. It is evident that modern technology is an achievement since it leads to great findings and innovations. Despite its numerous benefits, it has become a threat to children development through things like the Internet, television and cell phones. It leads to erosion of a culture, moral deterioration, unhealthy life, low self-esteem among individuals and negligence of parental guidance. Therefore, man invented it, but it has now overtaken the inventor-man. For that reason, as we embrace technology, we should also embrace parental guidance and ensure that old ways of doing things should not be abandoned. Technology is good but for kids to reap the benefits of technology there must have self-control and sense of balance. References Gross, L. (2011). My media studies: Cultivation to participation.
