Extract of sample "Gothic Revival Arm Chair by Gustave Herter"

The Gothic Revival Armchair by Gustave Herter is chosen for the illustration of the Gothic Revival Furniture style between 1840 and 1860. The armchair is has a number of characteristics common with the Gothic Revival period including the use of heavy woods, dark stains and colours and having a close resemblance to church, castles, and cathedrals architecture. The other characteristic of the chair evidencing the period it was designed to include that it is large, has floral encasing with finely detailed finishing.

The joining was made through mortice and tenon joints allowing for a tight fit without the use of glue, one of the other main characteristic of furniture made during the Gothic revival period. Furniture during the Gothic Revival period was made to fit the highest class and with consideration for use by the wealthiest as evident in the quality of the chair and the attention to detail in the design of the chair. The importance of the Gothic Revival Furniture is the purity of geometric forms and forceful designs it evidenced, and they were designed with admirable elements.
