number Fungai Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels is an Italian painting by little known Italian painter Fungai Bernardino. He is estimated to have worked on this painting between 1510 and 1515. The painting gets its origin from the bible and is religious in nature. The key focus of the painting is The Virgin and the child. The painting is a representation of the basic stylistic innovations that started from the late 12th century and continued to evolve as the centuries passed. During this period, many people continued to make paintings of Madonna images that varied in composition and technique. Very little is known about the work or life of the painter. However, it is known that, during this time, the paintings were instrumental in both the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox churches. The painting was almost at the same time as the Madonna on the rocks by Leonardo Da Vinci and Titian Madonna of the house by Pesaro. These three paintings have the same composition of the virgin and the child (p. 204). Composition The painting has several characters from the bible, the primary figures being the virgin and the child as the centerpiece. In this painting, the child (Christ) is borne on a litter that is decorated with rose petals which are red and white in color. This signifies a marriage between the church and Mary Ecclesia, the church and Christ himself. The litter on which the child sits is held up by two angels. This is an act in the painting is meant to create the hierarchy of the painting. Behind the image, there is a parapet which is white in color. Behind the parapet, John the Baptist and Jerome are reading a book. In the background, there is a rock which is surrounded by a river. This gives the painting a feeling of some movement. The background image also consists of several people praying. The background also shows a beautiful landscape with a lot of activities in the background (P, 216). In Madonna on the rocks, the painting shows a photo of the Virgin Mary, the child (Christ) and John the Baptist as an infant. In this piece, they are arranged in a triangular manner. The background has rocks but, has a distant landscape of water and mountains. In this painting, the Virgin Mary is the apex of the figure which forms the shape of a pyramid. The composition of this painting is almost similar to that of Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels. However, there are slight differences. This includes the Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels where the background is an open space while in the Madonna on the rocks the background is more hidden as the rocks are dominant. The other difference is that the Madonna and Child with Saints depict more freedom and openness than the virgin on the rocks. The Titian Madonna goes against the old tradition of the virgin and the child being placed in the middle. This deliberate action is meant to give the painting a larger sense of movement as compared to the Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels. The painting uses both triangular and diagonal principles to ensure that the eyes of the viewer are drawn to the virgin and the child. The main difference between the composition of Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels and the titan Madonna is the way in which hierarchy is created. The hierarchy of this piece is created putting the virgin and the child in a space above the others. However, in Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels the hierarchy of the painting is created by making the virgin and the child its centerpiece. The angles in this painting are infants and are at the top while, in the Fungai painting, they are older and their gender site female (Gardner, Helen 253). Technical Analysis The Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels can be described as a very balanced painting. In this painting, the painter made sure that the images at the center of the painting are the large while those in the background appear smaller. This technique makes the painting to appear very real. The images in the paintings are symmetrical. The images in the frontline of the painting make it very balanced. The image the background of the image is also appears real. T technique used resembles the virgin on the rocks. The virgin on the rocks also is very symmetrical. The images in the frontline appear larger than those in the backline. This makes the image appear real. If you compare the Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels and the titian Madonna, the titian Madonna is less symmetrical.in the titian. The images all seem like they are the same size. It is difficult to tell which of the image is in the foreground or that which is the background. The titan Madonna is very abstract. The technique used by the painter of the Madonna differs from that of the Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels. The color The Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels photo uses warm colors. The painting is painted is such a way that the light will be predominant. The colors used give the painting a light feeling making the photo less serious. The painting also uses the primary colors. This makes the painting to be very simple in nature. The painter wanted to put the context of the picture in broad daylight. To signify the light, the painter increased the intensity of the colors used. The colors also help to create contrast between all the objects in the painting. The light gives the painting a feeling of movement and activity. The parapet in the image is well defined due to the color used. Intensity of the colors is similar to the titian Madonna. This makes the objects in the painting to be very well defined and appear sharper. Both painters used warm colors. The paintings also have used light to gives a sense of activity. However, in the virgin on the rocks the painting uses cool colors. This gives the painting a very serious and mature feeling. The painting uses secondary colors which makes the painting to appear complicated. The background is very hazy. It is not easy to distinguish the objects in the background. The painting is also dull in nature. There is a feeling of inactivity in the photo. The objects in the virgin on the rocks are not as sharp as in, the other two paintings. In this painting, the rocks in the background are detailed but the background is not very contrasting. When comparing the three paintings, there are similarities that can be noted. One is that the photos have the same context. The virgin and the child are the main subjects of the painting. The paintings are the work of early Italian painters. These painters showcased their religion, culture and beliefs in their paintings. Though the painters used different techniques to create the hierarchy of the painting, the main theme of the paintings is similar. The painters use the different color schemes. The Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels uses primary colors and also has a warm color scheme, Madonna titian uses a warm color scheme and secondary colors while the Virgin on the rocks use secondary colors and cool color scheme. All these differences help the difference between the techniques of the painters. Madonna and Child with Saints and Angels were painted during the period that marked the end of the Middle Ages and the commencement of the modern times (Renaissance). The art followed the same trend as the older paintings in this period. Painting would fit perfectly in the Rococo art history. The art answers all the historical questions. The painting creates a certain impression of nature. The artist uses this painting to express his feelings to the world. The painting was inspired by the cultural, economic, social and aesthetic values. These values were the main motivation behind the painting (p. 167). Work cited Gardner, Helen, and Fred S. Kleiner.
