It is different in terms of the extremely innovative tactics involved, and the humongous range of abilities possessed by such groups. An evaluation of U.S. military mortalities from terrorist attacks between 1980 and 2002 reveals that it exceeded the total number of battle fatalities from “Operations Urgent Fury (Grenada), Just Cause (Panama), and Desert Shield/ Storm (Persian Gulf)” (U.S. Army TRADOC, 2006). This paper is an account of the threat of terrorism that the US is currently subjected to, and aims on providing analytic information about the most effective American anti-terrorism organization and its tactics for ensuring national security.
History of Extremist Terrorism in USA: From the onset of nineteenth century, America has been experiencing extreme terrorism. From the Abolitionist/Anarchist movements, to the assassination of great Presidents, there have been numerous occasions when terrorism has hit the state. However, the worst threat of terrorism so far is by the fanatic pious groups. The problem of extreme religious terrorism already strengthened its roots outside America by the 1970s with the emergence of liberation movements in Palestine, Algeria, and South Africa, etc.
(Gage, 2011). The Guerrilla tactics of war gained prominence due to these militant groups. From 1970, onwards, planned episodes of terrorism began to attack Americans both within, and beyond its borders (Gage, 2011). A total of 1347 attacks of terrorism has occurred in America by 2007, out of which three-fourth occurred during the 70s (Global Terrorism Database, 2010). New York City is the most vulnerable in this respect since 284 of these attacks targeted this city (Global Terrorism Database, 2010).
