While it’s possible to consider specific elements that convey this purity and innocence, such as the aforementioned woman, to me this visceral impression spanned the entirety of the painting through the interaction of color, image, and narrative. While I recognized the purity and innocence inherent in work, at the same time I had I recognized its immediate Biblical significance. While I was not familiar with the specific Biblical story the image was from I recognized the depiction of Jesus.

The image of Jesus in the painting for me carried with it an expansive array of connotations. Immediately I recognized that the scene was most likely not one of the artist’s creation, but had a direct link to a Biblical tale. Additionally I had the general recollection of the Christian moral sense inherent in the image. While these considerations greatly added to my impressions of the poem, they also contributed to my understanding of the deeper significance of art appreciation. The image of Jesus and my consideration of my impression of it demonstrated to me how one image – in this situation the image of Jesus – can be loaded in that it contains a multitude of meanings that otherwise couldn’t be conveyed with the drawing of a normal man.
