Soul of the Citizen: Living with Conviction in Challenging Times Paul Loeb shares his views of the current way of the citizens of the United s towards other people and their surroundings and his inspiring opinion about it through his book, Soul of a Citizen. One of his quotes in the book states, “To get more people engaged in critical public issues, we need to understand the obstacles. A key barrier is a political version of what psychologists call "learned helplessness.” He tries to convey that most Americans are thoughtful, caring and generous and those traits normally extend to immediate family members and to friends. Some help can also be extended to strangers on the highway, stranded by a roadside breakdown and to some people on the streets asking for alms. But too often we put walls between our private sanctuaries and the outside world; forgetting that public participation is the core of democratic citizenship.
Being able to identify the pressing issues the country is facing today isn’t enough for us to give ourselves a tap on the shoulder for a job well-done or enough for us to be able to regain our political voice. Psychologists say that retreating from social involvement due to the thinking “all is well with the world” is called learned helplessness. This challenging term depicts that we shouldn’t fall in the trap the society has made and excuse ourselves from civic engagements with the reason “others can do it better.” That thinking helped us create this very difficult situation we are all in. We should stop excusing ourselves from due to the let-down we receive from our leaders; instead, we should get involved in shaping a more generous common future. Although it doesn’t still give us guarantees, it is the only thing way that would give us hope.

Critical Thinking English- A New Earth Chapters One to Ten

.... Nevertheless, despite the spiritually uplifting messages that I have learned to like in Tolle’s book, there is one line I do not particularly like. From Chapter 5, one reads that “It is only when memories, that is to say, thoughts about the past, take you over completely that they turn into a burden, turn problematic, and become part of your sense of self. Your personality, which is conditioned by the past, then becomes your prison” (86). This line somehow condemns emotion and memories from the past in general. Although emotions and memories, as what was previously said, may not be spiritually helpful at times, some of them may be...

Book One Amazing Thing

... Possible Ending for One Amazing Thing All the nine characters will be rescued. But their lives will never be the same again. The tragedy that happened to them and, most importantly, the life stories they have shared to one another, have been life changing. The author has perfectly merged the tragedy of the situation, being trapped in a building with no water or food supply, with the hope and excitement emanating from the unique life stories of the different characters. But the story has actually no satisfactory ending; the author leaves this part to the readers’ imagination. Thus this essay provides one possible ending to the story.
