This is the beginning of the weather-lore rhyme and mostly referred as an old wives tale. In some parts of the world, the sailor is replaced by Sheppard due the fact that their lives depend more on agriculture. However, the common thing is its purpose- weather prediction associated with sky color at different time (Martin).I read about the tale on internet and my interest deepened as I read more. The tales are usually based on human observations and passes from generation to generation through writing or word of mouth; however, roots of this rich tales are discovered in religion, science, and literature as well which makes it more than an old wives’ tale.

This paper explores the red sky old wives’ tale; analyses its origin; digs its scientific base; discusses some personal observations; and finds that the tale is true even today. However, there are some unsupported observations that idea may be true for a particular location. The fact is that, the saying is even older. It is considered that before preserving in written form, the saying passed on from generations to generation by word of mouth. As early as 1935,there is a saying in written version of Matthew XVI in the Wyclif Bible (as cited in Martin).

In another more authentic version of Wyclif Bible, comparatively familiar form is stated, “When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and louring” (As cited in Martin). There are other versions of the similar saying in several literatures; in particular Shakespeare (Martin).Shakespeare used similar thoughts in his play, Venus and Adonis (as cited in The Library of Congress, 2011).After digging into the idea that where the real origin of red sky weather tale, the question is arises that why they originated.
