16 May Lord of the Flies Critical Analysis Paper Set in the backdrop of a raging war wiping out the remnants of humanity, Lord of the Flies is an exceptional piece of literature written by William Golding. In which a couple of young boys get marooned on a foreign island and try to recreate their lives once again with the help of the available resources around them. This book talks about motivation and determination with respect to human feelings and emotions. When the boys find themselves stranded on a remote island, they quickly begin the project of building a rough approximation of society and attempt to create a paradise. Right from building fires for the purpose of creating signals to losing out on all the hope that the boys had, the small group tries to stick together and aspire for a better tomorrow where they would eventually be found by someone and taken back home. However, the flames quickly take over the entire forest due to negligence on part of the young boys and that leads to some more trouble for them to face. The boys have no experience in living life or reality on their own; they have always lived under the shadows of their parents and have grown up with comfort and assistance beside them. Getting trapped on an island, the way they were, opened up their eyes to the world and helped them to embark upon a journey full of maturity. They soon begin to miss their parents even though at first the entire sense of being away from parental guidance envelopes them with happiness and excitement. They begin to understand the kind of responsibility that their parents had to shoulder in order to help them grow up into civil and beautiful human beings. (SparkNotes Editors.) The boys try to create a family of their own among themselves because they soon begin to realize that if they do not stick with each other, they will not be able to escape from the place. With time, they also begin to realize how vital team work is in carrying out any activity. They begin to understand the need for having each other around and quit bickering. Much the same way, society was born at some point of time and has failed in some areas to grow and develop because of the differences that people have created among each other. This book is an excellent example of how tribal groups were created in the past and still are in the modern world. It shows a clear picture of how people learn to survive with each other and how a presence is required in order to be able to live and survive on this planet despite a person not liking other people as much. One of the boys, Jack, is an example of how human beings strive to achieve excellence in everything that they do. In every aspect of society and living there seems to be some place or area for people to excel in and show their skill and talent in order to earn appreciation from others around them. Jack tries to assert his authority and leadership skills among the other boys in order to lead the pack because his sub conscious tells him that he can prove his greatness to himself once he is able to lead them away from the darkness of being marooned and into the light of a land far away from the dreary island. The boys crave for human touch and attention in their lost land, and thus strive to build a better tomorrow full of promise and hope, right from scratch. The book thus in this way helps to provide and throw light on how society was created because of the need for a man to be able to stay in touch with other people around him and feel like he has earned himself the right to live a tomorrow. They try and build a paradise on the basis of their imagination; a world where according to them everything goes on perfectly. Such a utopian land created by them had its own faults and flaws as well, however, the motive was achieved with perfection – of the boys trying to build a rough approximation of what society was according to them and how they perceived humanity and mankind to be. Ideologies and beliefs are the path on which human beings travel all the time, and it is the same idea that has become a part and parcel of this famous book over the years now. Creating a world ideal to the belief of a person is not an easy task because it always runs incompatible with someone else’s thoughts with respect to what life is and how it should be lived ideally. Thus, this book teaches the reader, on a different and parallel level, how it is important to give in to the needs of other people in order to find out where one stands in life. ("Lord of the Flies Comes Alive." ) Through the group of boys, the author has tried to explain the kind of significance that they each had and the impact that they each created on the lives of the others. They tried to build a world which would be perfect to the needs of each one of them, despite having their differences. They soon learned to live with the same as they came to terms with the fact that it was not easy to live a life selfishly. The Lord of the Flies thus is an excellent piece of writing that talks about how a person can build his own Utopia while breathing the same air as millions of others around him. The book has based itself on an example created by four young boys trying to search a life for themselves, lost on an island and how they come to teach each other and learn from one another, the simple meaning of life and society; of mankind and how living becomes important in the presence of each other. Through a vast sifting of human emotions and feelings, this book witnesses an exciting turn of events through the various pages as the characters try and encumber upon the topic of what society is and how it is contained with respect to human beings. It is truly an example of how people depend on each other in order to create a better tomorrow for themselves, even if they were marooned and lonely on an island, far away from the rest of humanity.
