The final part shows how the author analyses humanism and how he believes society has declined into the adoration and praise of man and his achievements. 1b. Varlam Shalamov’s stories are written during the Stalinist period. Through the Snow is a striking metaphor about writing as walking through the snow, with readers following on horses or trucks. Berries is about prisoners who are tempted to cross a line that they are not supposed to. They are tempted by the berries on the other side and when a prisoner crosses the line, he is shot dead by the guard. 2a. Zoshchenko can be criticized for his simple and careless use of words, but hidden behind this is a serious view of the realities of the Soviet Power.
The importance of the short story Electrification is the fact that one of Lenin’s most famous slogans was “Communism is Soviet Power plus the Electrification of the Whole Country”. In The Bathhouse, the author talks about the middling class ring in the U.S. The stories are presented in a comical manner but depicts so much about Communist Russia. Red Caviar Sandwiches is a strange love story, set at the center of unpleasantness. The dorm of the Pushkin student is an awful place. It is dirty, stinking, and almost collapsing.
Even when a couple is trying to get some privacy, the author is describing the images of frozen feces in the latrine. The contrasts in this story are brilliantly portrayed, almost making the reader feel that it is impossible to expect anything good from these surroundings. 3a. My First Goose tells readers about military life, but this time, set in the barracks. The story begins with gaining respect by stomping on a goose, and ends in brotherhood and warmth, as the soldiers sleep in the hay loft.
