The information provided in the site is not very useful for the essay as the data provided were very general in nature and focused more on legislations passed during the period rather than factors contributing to the spread of slavery in the areas identified for the essay. The book contains comprehensive information of the history of the American people from as early as 13,000 – 2,500 B.C. until just before the 1900s. Boyer, et.al. (2009, pp. 53 – 56) indicated in the book that the spread of slavery in the Carribean and Carolina was primarily due to factors related to agriculture and the relevance of some crops during those time.
It clearly identified the role of planting sugar cane as requiring as much labor which necessitated the employment of African slaves in the West Indies plantation. On the other hand, rice was the crop identified to have enriched settlers in Carolina which likewise required slaves to grow it. The author discussed the causes for American civil war particularly focusing on slavery. He clearly identified two separate regions with diverse paths as significant in the history of the civil war. Hickman averred that “the widening of the gap between slave and free states was symbolic of the changes occurring in each region.
While the South was devoted to an agrarian plantation economy with a slow growth in population, the North had embraced industrialization, large urban areas, infrastructure growth, as well as was experiencing high birth rates and a large influx of European immigrants” (2010, 1). The citation could be mentioned as part of the essay to be written on the topic. The author proffered relevant information about slavery in America starting from the reason why America went to war. Subsequently, the beginnings, spread, and opposition to slavery were discussed.
