Proposals to reform The US’ Health Care Legislation have severally failed until March 23, 2010 when President Obama and his Democratic party leaders were able to pass and sign the bill. This paper delves into the Obamas Health Care Reform 2010, the most expansive social legislation ratified in decades, and explains how will lead to a significant change/overhaul to the United States’ current health care system.
On 23 March 2010; after one roller-coaster year of heated partisan combat, negotiations and hearings looking into health care details, and an almost-death political encounter after Obama together with other Congress Democratic leaders seemed to have reached the brink of success; President Obama signed the Health Care Reform legislation. Through a 220 – 215vote, the House had approved its bill during the month of November (7th) in the year 2009, while on December 24, the the Senate passed an 871 billion dollars bill. In a dramatic vote, the House endorsed the landmark health care bill 219 to 212 the house had to overhaul the United States’ health care system and warrant that millions of Americans get access to medical insurance. This is following decades of numerous Democratic presidents’ futile attempts, including Bill Clinton and Harry Truman, thereby making the moment very essential in the long legislative combat. The aim of this research paper is to evaluate the impact of recent health care reforms on the economy and society of USA. It will be guided by the following research questions: What factors influence the recent health care reforms in USA? How do politics and economic-health issues affect recent health care reforms in USA? What is the economic impact of recent health care reforms to Americans?
From this paper it is clear that United States has debated the merits of universal health care since the 1912 election. Whenever the issue has been brought up, the politicians have been smacked down by public opinion. Even Franklin Roosevelt at the height of his power and political skill failed to pass a nationalized health care plan.
The patients, doctors and health care professionals in general have been unsatisfied with the state of affairs, as many were left uninsured, restricting insurance to government sector alone was restricting the services offered, the employer based insurance scheme was leaving out the unemployed, administrative procedures for availing insurance were complex, quality of health care was under the scanner, and the financial obligations involved in giving decent health care facilities to all was threatening to the government exchequer (Garson).
Both, the Republicans and the Democrats, utilized the problems in healthcare sector for gaining political advantage time to time. American health sector is dominated by the private insurance companies and they are charging too much amounts as insurance premiums from the public.
