Children in Years 3, 4 and 5 (only in the areas of small number of children present)of all primary schools located within three kilometers from the air quality monitoring stations were selected. Details of respiratory symptoms were obtained from a questionnaire given to the parents of the children which was adopted to retrieve required outcomes. Data was analyzed using SAS software. Descriptive analysis was done to identify and compare the characteristics of the study population and Logistic regression analysis was performed to find out possible association between the dependant and independent variables.
According to the results of this study it was concluded that there is an association between air pollution and some respiratory problems in children and the level of air pollution pose a health risk meet the current air quality standards in Australia. The main objective of the researcher of this study was to find out whether the carpel tunnel syndrome is job related. The researcher is a medical practitioner and he used following six (6) assumptions to test the hypothesis. Although the above assumptions are generally appeared to be logical they may not be the optimal indicators to identify possible relationship between work and carpal tunnel syndrome.
As an example if the third assumption is considered, there is no information about the intensity of the work. The researcher used the data of his 347 patients diagnosed with the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). According to the paper he has recorded their occupation and other personal and anthropometric data such as age, disease conditions and weight. However it is not clear how the intensity (how hard the job was) of the jobs was measured. It is more likely that he had categorized the work by the general thought of the job rather than assessing the work done by each individual.
