Extract of sample "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry and Me"

We now live in very diverse and multi-cultured societies. Mildred Taylor’s ‘Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry’, has had a very serious impact on me. As a child and during my schooling years, my exposure to a diverse society was very limited as I am from parochial school. However, due to my interest in reading, I came across Taylor’s book which has left a profound impact on my life. I was shocked to read that even almost ninety years after the civil war, African Americans were still being treated with such terrible prejudice. White people were still lynching African Americans. Laws and law enforcement were not color blind. Money from the government was given to the separate black and white schools in very unequal ways. This book opened my eyes to the various aspects that people were differentiated by and this led me to understand and adopt one main principle in life, ‘Cultural differences between people should not only be tolerated but appreciated for what they can give to the resulting melting pot of humanity.
As a person, I have grown a lot of posts reading this book and I now am able to appreciate the differences among different people from different cultures and backgrounds. I realize that each one of us has something very unique and different which can be shared with others. However, this book has permitted me to recognize the other beautiful things and aspects of others from different cultures and to respect their culture the way I would like mine to be treated. I have grown to understand, in a world where so many of us come from so many different backgrounds, it is us who have created all the barriers.
All humans have been created equal and all of us have equal rights to being treated well.
My prejudice and light inclination towards people from my own caste and country has been wiped out completely.
Having read of Cassie’s free-spirited nature and rebellious attitude toward those who look down upon her has led me to understand how difficult her life can be and how essential it is to respect every person for who they are rather than where they come from, their color or even their caste. My world has grown to become a beautiful, peaceful place and each day of life brings me newer lessons that I can learn from my diverse friends. The change in my prejudice has led me to learn numerous new things and aspects of life and gain a more diverse perspective in life. I enjoy life much more now and take each day as a learning process with a number of beautiful people around me. Read More
