According to significant modern scholars, Judith is a historical romance written for didactic purposes and the author gives more importance to the religious message than to the historical fact. The intrinsic literary merit of the story of Judith had a significant influence on the popularity of the work. “The Book of Judith is a story written for house-hold reading. While it may properly be classed as didactic, yet it is one of those popular tales in which the chief concern of the writer is with the telling of the story rather than with the pointing of a moral, and in which the wish to interest takes precedence even of the desire to instruct. What gained for the book its high esteem in early times, in both the Jewish and the Christian world, was its intrinsic merit as a story, rather than its religious teaching or its patriotism.” (The Book of Judith: General Information) Therefore, the story of Judith interests anyone who believes in the didactic purpose of the biblical books along with its intrinsic merit as a story. One of the most determining aspects of the Book of Judith is how the story fits into the general nature of the biblical books while also keeping the interest of a popular story.
The Book of Judith tells the story of the pious and ascetic widow who takes on the public role of savior by deceiving and beheading the powerful enemy general, and the beautiful Judith has fascinated historians, artists, writers etc. Significantly, the interpretations by several important scholars has presented her as femme fatale, female warrior, feminist heroine, virtue personified, lying murderer, and saintly beauty and all these interpretations reflected the characteristics of the period of the specific scholar. “Judith was ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Story from the bible 2

... condemned to a life of inequality in eternal servitude to the men whom she’d wronged. Although this has long been accepted as the historic custom, there is little evidence in the Bible that Jesus felt this was an appropriate behavior. When one reads through the gospels carefully, one can find numerous instances in which women were considered to be inferior to men, but that Jesus broke the customs and laws concerning how they were to be treated. Throughout the gospels, Jesus can be seen to act in direct opposition to the way in which men were expected to treat women as he deliberately moved against Old Testament law to embrace women as equal human beings engaged in the process of life. In his actions and words, Jesus can be seen to take...

The Story of Joan of Arc

As like any other hero in history, Joan of Arc is brave and has that sheer determinism that helps her in her struggles against the English. She finally leads the famous Battle of Orleans where the Burgundians betray her. Joan of Arc has a tragic fate as the young leader is seized, tortured and eventually burnt at the stake, however history soon immortalises the young heroine as she is later labelled a Catholic ‘saint’.

Later God blessed them with a son whose name was Samuel (1 Samuel 1:2). The reference brings out the nature of the woman as faithful and persistent. Florian also borrows a reference from the bible when she mentions the fathomless seas and the gleaming skies. This is evident when she says, “And set sail under the gleaming skies, over the fathomless seas and blue”. (Florian, 12).The mentioning of the skies and the seas appears in the bible where the story about God’s creation occurs. God created the skies...
