Technology and life Can technology improve our quality of life? What can you do when you are so sick but don’t have a phone to contact 911 or someone else to help you? The answer is we will be helpless in such cases. Old people did not use much technology. So their life was miserable. Now, people like to use more and more technology because it can ensure better safety to the people. Technology can help people to learn quickly. It can reduce the work of people. It can simplify the complicated works and hence people will get more time to do other works. Technological advancements offer students wide variety of resources to help them in their studies. Also, with the technological advancement we can have a better health life, too. In my opinion, if we have better technology, it will make our education, communication and health better. Consider the case of our education. If we don’t have modern Technology, maybe we still have to hand- write each text books that we have to use. Consider the case in which we have to fully hand-write the whole text books which is need for the students. It will take longer time to handwrite the books. The hand writing will create problems also. One person’s hand writing may not be understandable to another person. Hand written books will be damaged more easily. When we think of all the problems above, then only we will understand the importance of printing technologies. Printing made our works a lot easier. We can print enough books for our requirements. The quality of the printing will be much better than Technology and life 2 the handwritten books. Starting from pencils, pen and now we are using computers for writing and storing information. Internet is widely used to obtain information for the students. Technology helps the students to have online classes nowadays. Even without going to any college campus disabled students can have their classes while sitting at home. For example, when I was in high school for the second year, my teacher told me that she has to go to another country for her higher studies. I was worried about that because if I am going to study with another teacher, I will have to learn their style again to start with. So I told my teacher that I don’t want to study with another teacher. In the beginning, we don’t know what to do because we were very far away from each other and she could not just leave me even for one year. So we decide to use webcam to have lesson. It was very easy to have lessons online because I just need to put the webcam to a right place and we could start talk. My teacher could see me studying and I could see my teacher too. We did this for one year and didn’t have any problem, and I got very high grade for my final exam too. If I had to change my teacher, I will have to start to learn different style again under a new teacher. More over my teacher was very much expert in music and the new teacher may not be so and that will cause difficulties for me to learn more about music in my high school. That will make me less expert than my Technology and life 3 other friends and classmates. More over if I change my teacher, her styles and way of teaching may not fit for my requirements. Technology helped me in retaining my teacher even if she had to leave my country. Such things may not be imaginable in 18 th or 19 th centuries. Thus the technology helped me in keeping quality of my life. Technology can improve our communication too. I think this is very important for the workers or students who are not close from their family. If they have a phone or computer, they could talk to their family and friends very easy. In the past, we write letters or telegram to contact people. Now, we have more choices for contacting people. We can use Telephone, cell phone, Skype, Internet and E-mail, SMS etc to contact people. Consider my case; I am an international student. If I want to talk with my family, I always use my cell phone to contact them. If I don’t have a phone, I may need to send a mail to them and it will take long time to reach them. It will take long time for me to receive the reply too. There were many times, I call my family just because I missed them so much and that makes me feel better too. When I first came to Chicago, I felt homesickness and loneliness. I couldn’t get rid of my feeling and I thought of flying back to home because of my loneliness. However, my mom talks to me every day and tried to make me feel better. This really helped me to feel better and to overcome such personal problems. Technology and life 4 If I didn’t have a cell phone how can I talk to my family, relatives and friends? If I could not speak to my family sometimes that may create psychological problems for me and I have to start taking medicines. Once I start taking medicines I have to continue it till the end of my life. My cell phone helped me in avoiding all such problems by providing me opportunity to contact my friends and relatives whenever needed. That makes my life better. Television is an essential part of human life nowadays. We can see what all happening around us with the help of television. We can record our child hood activities which we were not aware of and we can see it at a later stage. Life without television is not imaginable now. But during the 15 th or 16 th century nobody even think of such things. Technology can contribute for our health also. Consider the traditional methods in treating diseases of early days with the present methods. Now doctors are performing the transplantation of heart also. One person with a defective heart can have a new heart replaced. The inner organs and their functions are more elaborately examined using CT or MRI scans which replaced the X-ray technology. The major surgeries which needed to cut and split the diseased organs, can be replaced by key hole surgeries which require only a small hole to be made at the diseased area. Such technological advancements were not even imaginable in early days. Thus, I think the technological Technology and life 5 advancements help the people a lot in getting their health better which make them happier. I remember when I was young, I had broken my arm. My grandmother took me to the traditional hospital to fix the broken arm. It took around one month to fix it and I had to put some herb to my arm for distillation every day. After one month, they took off my bandage and said that my arm has regained to its normal shape. But when I tried to feel it, I found that my arm couldn’t move. Even though I tried very hard it doesn’t move. My friends were very angry and they took me to another hospital where they got more technological facilities. They found that my arm was not fixed properly and after their treatment I could move my arm just like before. If my grandmother was able to take me to the second hospital, I could have got my arm fixed and cured in 2 weeks time. I had to suffer the pain again which could have been avoided if I could get the treatment of the advanced hospital. There are certain arguments against the technology also. The main argument against the technology is that it will make the people lazier. Blind dependence of technology will reduce the physical activities of people and thereby causes more diseases. Consider the case in which nowadays people rely more on vehicles even for traveling 1 kilometer. In earlier days people usually walk even 10 to 20 kilometers if necessary. The interesting thing is the medical Technology and life 6 science asking the people to rely more on their walking abilities to reduce the threat of diseases like high B.P. cholesterol, heart problems, etc. So technological advancements can affect the health of those people, who are unable to change their habits. People argue that technology can improve the working conditions of the workers. We should remember that the excess use of robots can cause the loss of jobs for many. Such jobless people will engaged in antisocial activities to cater their needs. So blind dependence on robots and technologies, can create problems even in the society and family. Of course the robots can be used for activities which are dangerous to human. But it should never cause hindrance to the employment opportunities of people. Technology can affect the morality and ethics of social life. Through internet young children are getting the opportunities to see the obscene materials which will lead them to crimes and other encroachments. Adolescent period is a dangerous one and youths at this stage will don’t have much belief in ethics or religious activities. They will run after the obscene materials blindly due to their biological reasons. The Bluetooth cell phones are nowadays spreading the obscene pictures which will destroy the morality of the society. We can see that even while taking the lunch people are talking to someone Technology and life 7 else. Even while eating, we don’t have the privacy and peace of mind because of the cell phone if you are a business man. The restless life is the contribution of technology. Such busy life will actually harmful to the human health. Since our tasks were made easy using the technologies, we are going for more and more jobs out of our needs. We are living in a modern society and hence the daily expenses are going high and people have to rely more than one duty to find more money for their daily expenses. Actually, their quality of life being reduced though they are getting more money. Conclusion Technology can provide better living conditions. Ancient people had worked hard to survive. The current people are not at all working like the old people. This will create health problems. Technology has advantages and disadvantages also. Though the modern facilities like Television, Computer, Internet, Robots, Artificial satellites, new health products and development in medical field, etc. are given to us by modern technology. The problems of modern technology are laziness, diseases due to lack of works, etc. Technology is good for life. It will reduce the difficulties of our works. So what to do with the technology? Should we go after the technology blindly? The answer is no. We should accept the technology in a careful manner.
