Thus dementia is a problem in the society and for the people of the society. Dementia is a disease, which affects 10% of Americans over the age of 65 and has been described as "an approaching epidemic" (Jonathan, 1991). The health and social care needs of people suffering from dementia increases with age until death occurs according to Senior Journal (2006) dedicated to the cause of ageing, Alzheimer’s and dementia. Under the circumstances, it becomes imperative that the dementia patients are under the right care and guidance as there is no cure for dementia.
The diagnosis of dementia can be devastating for patients and families especially if they feel nothing can be done about it. While there is no cure that can reverse the progress of dementia, some therapies can help tackle the disease. Behavior problem of the patients account for the stress amongst the caregivers. The stress could range from depression, to sadness for the patient, lack of appetite, lack of energy to socialize, and anger. With proper guidance and support extended to the family and the community, the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the patients can be better handled (CNADC, 2002).
Behavioral problems are present in 70% of the dementia patients and dementia affects 10% of Americans over the age of 65, and hence this is considered “an approaching epidemic” (Jonathan). To tackle this social issue, the physician has to take the attitude that family members and the primary caregivers are also patients (Jonathan). The caregivers need to be educated that the patient’s environment needs modification and that the patients denial should not be confronted. The environment should be familiar and safe.
Thought should be given to simple things like large signs at the toilets can help the dementia patients figure out important information themselves thereby enabling them to maintain their dignity and independence. Care should be taken
