It has been a couple of years since I set foot in the university. I spent that span of time taking two different majors, namely, textile and apparel. I chose these fields of study in an apparent desire to satisfy what I want. For, indeed, ‘want’ is the most persuasive argument that will surface when faced with an important decision pertaining to our personal life. I soon discovered that this has some drawbacks for; one, what I or we want is usually temporary; and, two, one needs a careful self-assessment to understand whether we will fit a particular mould, for, above all, it is only ourselves whom we can trust to know which is best for us. I was close to depression because I felt there was nothing I could achieve, switching from one field to another. It was a state of confusion. But it was this time when I finally came across my salvation. I discovered architecture.

Turning inwardly, I learned that my major interest lies in the spatiality of things. I have been looking for something, which would allow me to express and explore psychological and social issues and eventually free me from the burdens of the self-serving interests I have had in the past. I found it in architecture. I was surprised how this phrase by Ayn Rand sums up my attitude toward life:
“He looked at the granite. To be cut, he thought and made into walls. He looked at a tree. To be split and made into rafters. He looked at a streak of rust on the stone and thought of iron ore under the ground. To be melted and to emerge as girders against the sky. These rocks, he thought, are here for me; waiting for the drill, the dynamite and my voice; waiting to be split, ripped, pounded, reborn, waiting for the shape my hands will give to them.” (Rand, pp 15-16)

There is a method of critical thinking in architecture that appeals to me so much. In this methodology, a way is being shown where I could fully express my ideas – visually, spatially and psychologically – be effective, and become real.
We are reminded that architecture is, directly and indirectly, related to human life. It impressed on my mind that the possibility would be endless in making a difference. I seek to specialize in concepts such as sustainable architecture, urban planning - architecture in the context of a positive social force. The art and science of architecture can leave a lasting impression not just in terms of aesthetics but also in functionality and hence, the improvement of the human lifestyle.

Hopefully, (school name) directs me to develop methods of my own, of critical thinking to engage the output into the structure. I seek an education that would equip me with the necessary faculties to implement a design that plays a large part in human interaction. My vision is timeless and sustainable architecture, one that is a built form that follows function without decorating elements.
