17 October 2007 Proposed What Changes in Leadership Skills Are Needed in 21st Century Health Care Research Objectives: A comparison of marketing management in present hospital services indicates a need for leadership to interact more with staff and consumers. In addition, the increasing cost of health care is escalating beyond a leader's ability to find an economic balance. One specific question that arises is whether or not it is feasible to consider an increase in public health care for all. Also, in the healthcare business, there is a need to address staff shortages, not so much because of salary but because of stress due to unrealistic demands. The clinics that offer both general and specialist health care are mostly for Medicaid recipients. There is a wide middle class of patients without coverage-they make too much for Medicaid and are not old enough for Medicare. Even if they are eligible for Medicare, it does not cover all their health needs. Problem Statement: With so many areas of U.S. health care in commercial chaos at present, it is necessary for leadership to include all members of their organizations in decision making. Only with a leader willing to take advantage of what staff offers can a working relationship be established. Another problem area in health care is a better understanding of the needs and wants of consumers. The most apparent issues in health care at present are related to Medicare, Children's Health Care Insurance Program (SCHIP), and Health Information Technology (HIT).
Literature Review and Research Design: In the upcoming elections, health care is a major issue. Studies showing current statistics of the number of people who do not have health insurance and the overcrowded conditions in public clinics can be found on the Internet. As for leadership in health care, the need for cooperation is evident in articles and past discussions of what makes a good leader, again on the Internet. The various aspects of leadership in sports, in business, or in philosophical disussions can be studied to develop a management plan that takes advantage of the suggestions offered by various organizations. It is of course necessary to accumulate enough research material for an analysis that gives proof of the hypothesis set forth - Can leadership organize a successful working relationship with members of a health care system
Resource Required: The Research Proposal will require extensive online study and leadership history to determine which areas best reflect the suggestions for successful leadership.
Business/Management Implications of the Study: An overview of the problems being faced by leadership in the health care area requires a more simple resolution than is currently being offered. The proposal will attempt to break down the specific areas of concern and offer possible solutions. The health care industry at present in the United States is simply not working, and it needs a major overhaul.
Limitations of the Research: Because of the broad spectrum of health care, the research must stay within the scope of leadership as it relates to three areas suggested for study: Medicare, State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), and Health Information Technology (HIT). Can good leadership bring about resolutions in these areas With flexibility and a positive outlook, the future can bring about answers to a longterm problem.
