Internet Resourcing Project 3 Putting it all Together: A Blueprint for a Research Project Part Topic Approval The of this research project is about football. Football is one of the popular sports in our country with basketball and baseball. I am interested in Football as a sport because of the high-level of competition involved. As a contact sport it is thrilling to watch. The high intensity and strategic plays combined with brute force make it a high-impact game for many. As an incoming football player, I know the game and I am good at it. College football to me is a stepping-stone for many aspiring young football players to join the professional league. I know the chances of playing professional football depend as much to the player as the coach. They work together to build the strongest team possible. The players have the grit, the coach uses and makes the plan. I admire the role the coach plays in any ball game. The coach serves as teacher and commander. He is the think tank. In following career in football, it is not my goal to remain as a player but to coach. My plans involve getting a contract in the college athletic division as a football coach. I know there are many skills that I need to develop first and I also need to know the job. This is why I narrowed my research down to focus on coaching college football. Part 2 Search Directories My research topic is football. I narrowed it down to college football because I will play as a college football player. However, I don't see myself as a player forever but as a coach. I wanted to help players play their best and be the best they can be. As a coach I know I have the chance to motivate and mentor them. At this stage of my research, I found 30 websites that I believe can be helpful in furthering my subject research. The list of websites includes: 1. http://football.about.com/od/nationalfootballleague/NFL_Databank.htm 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football 3. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/index 4. http://www.secsports.com/index.phps=&url_channel_id=2&change_well_id=1 5. http://homepages.cae.wisc.edu/dwilson/rsfc/oth_sites/ 6. http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/football.htm 7. www.ncaafootball.com 8. www.usafootball.com 9. www.football.com 10. www.footballoutsiders.com 11. http://www.britishcouncil.org/japan-sport-footballculture 12. http://www.football-plays.com/ 13. http://www.the-football.com/ 14. http://www.popwarner.com/football/pop.asplable=overview 15. www.afca.com 16. www.playfootball.com 17. www.pro-football-reference.com 18. http://cfn.scout.com 19. www.d1collegefootball.com 20. http://www.footballaid.com/ 21. http://www.firstbasesports.com/football_glossary.html 22. http://www.worldfootball.org/ 23. http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/programme/index_uk.aspSportCode=FB 24. http://physics.unl.edu/outreach/football.html 25. http://www.footballyears.net/ 26. www.football-linx.com 27. www.nfl.com 28. www.thefa.com 29. www.expertfootball.com 30. http://www.football.info/ My search started with identifying three search directories available in the internet. I did that by searching over Google with the keywords "list of search directories" and found 10,400,000 hits. I scrolled and found the link "major search engine directory" from searchenginewatch.com. I clicked the link and it led me to a list of top choice search directories in the web. Among the top picks, I chose Google, AllTheWeb and Teoma. The first search directory that I used was www.alltheweb.com. I entered "football" in the search tab and the engine came out with 1,080,000,000 hits. I then scrolled through the lists of URLs and opened links that I thought would help me in my research. Probably because of its high-multitude of hits, I only had to surf 14 pages of URL list to collect 10 websites from this directory. The websites are: http://football.about.com/od/natioalfootballleague/NFL_Databank.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/index http://www.secsports.com/index.phps=&url_channel_id=2&change_well_id=1 http://homepages.cae.wisc.edu/dwilson/rsfc/oth_sites/ http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/football.htm www.ncaafootball.com www.usafootball.com www.football.com www.footballoutsiders.com The second search directory was www.teoma.com. I used the same keyword, "football," to start my query. Teoma came out with 142,530,000 hits. I surfed 39 webpages before I collected 10 relevant websites. The websites are: http://www.britishcouncil.org/japan-sport-footballculture http://www.football-plays.com/ http://www.the-football.com/ http://www.popwarner.com/football/pop.asplable=overview www.afca.com www.playfootball.com www.pro-football-reference.com http://cfn.scout.com www.d1collegefootball.com http://www.footballaid.com/ The third on my list was www.google.com. Searching the keyword "football," the directory returned 30,300,000 hits. I also intended to collect 10 websites to complete the 30 websites needed for this search phase. I had to go through 20 pages of URL lists to finish the task. The websites I collected are: http://www.firstbasesports.com/football_glossary.html http://www.worldfootball.org/ http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/programme/index_uk.aspSportCode=FB http://physics.unl.edu/outreach/football.html http://www.footballyears.net/ www.football-linx.com www.nfl.com www.thefa.com www.expertfoortball.com www.football.info The approach was effective and easy to use. Search directories contain information handpicked by a human being and not by software-based robots or spiders. Because of this significant difference, a directory gives the most relevant hits available. This makes the search fast and easy. Part 3 Find and search a specialized database The phase 3 of this research involved finding a Specialized Database with information on my subject. For this, I used www.alltheweb.com, and typed in the keywords "list of specialized database for sports." It returned 4,480,000 hits. I searched through the listing and found several subscription-based sports databases. Knowing I will have to pay to use those, I skipped them and looked for other websites. I also found college library databases but I don't have access to those. Feeling that I needed to refine my search, I did. I changed the keywords to "list of specialized database," thinking I can search for coaching college football within the database. This produced 19,000,000 hits. On the first page result list, I found http://www.noodletools.com/debbie/literacies/information/5locate/advicedepth.html, a site that contains over 5,000 subject listings. It offered a list of select invisible web databases. I chose www.turbo10.com and immediately searched for "coaching college football" and it produced 28 hits. Based on my early search use, the site's search tool uses simple keyword searches. I can apply Boolean logic in the search site. I used both Boolean OR, AND to search for the database. I typed in keywords "coaching or football," and produced 27 results. I also typed in "coaching and football," and this produced 28 results. From the database, I found 5 significant websites. The following were the result of my first query: http://grassrootscoaching.com/, http://www.touchdownskills.com/. Next results were from my second query: http://ukfootballcoachingnetwork.co.uk/joomla/index.php, http://footballandcoaching.com/, http://www.skillstorm.de/english/coaching-football.html. Part 4 Query search engines Search engines are the most popular search sites in the internet. Since they also offer ample information, I queried three search engines for this project. The first is the number one search engine, www.google.com. I used Boolean logic to start my search. My keywords were "coach+college+football" which returned about 3.2M hits. I surfed through 30 pages before I found the top 5 most relevant websites for my research. These are: http://www.expertvillage.com/video-series/2701_football-coaching.htm http://www.footballfoundation.com/ http://www.coacheshotseat.com/SalariesContracts.htm http://www.footballcoachcentral.com/ http://en.allexperts.com/q/Football-Instruction-2069/Becoming-College-Football-Coach.htm The second search engine was www.msn.com where I used truncation for the query. Truncation keywords used were "college coach* foot*" which returned 2,380,000 hits. I skimmed through 25 pages to gather the following results: http://collegecoachnow.wordpress.com/ http://www.baseballtips.com/contact_college.html http://www.peachtreeridgesoftball.com/html/Players/College/coaches-want-to-know.htm http://www.ehow.com/articles_4970-coaching-college-.html http://www.mycoachonline.com/football/index.lasso The last engine was www.yahoo.com where I used phrasing to jumpstart my search. The keywords "coaching college football" produced 24,700 hits. It took me 2 pages only to find the last 5 websites: http://footballandcoaching.com/ http://www.footballtools.com/products/football_coaching_software.php http://cfn.scout.com/2/705698.html http://www.americanfootballmonthly.com/Subaccess/articles.phpp=Magazine/2002/June'02/spotlight02.html http://www.ehow.com/how_2089319_run-spread-offense-college-football.htmlref=fuel&utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ssp&utm_campaign=yssp_art Part 5 Library Resources For the library resources, I located two online library catalogs by searching www.alltheweb.com. This returned 190,000 hits. I used http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/Catalogs/ then chose the UCB library pathfinder's library catalog to search for books about "coach* football." The search returned 15 results. The book Coaching today's athlete; a football textbook, by John Ralston and Mike White, with Stanley Wilson, was one of the best books I found. This book was published by the National Press Books in Palo Alto, California, with a location code of UC Archives308if.f.W586.c. I came across King County library from the same Google search and opened http://catalog.kcls.org/search/Yarea%20libraries&searchscope=1&SORT=D to search from its catalog. I used the keywords "coaching college football" and got 3 returned hits. From these, I chose the book by Brian Curtis, Every week a season: a journey inside big-time college football. The book was published by Ballantine Books in New York last 2004. The ISBN number is 0345470141 and the library call number is 796.33263 CUR. In locating the magazines and periodicals, I accessed UCB article database located at http://sunsite2.berkeley.edu:8088/ERF/servlet/ERFmaincmd=searchSub&subjectId=53&resTypeId=12. However, the databases have restricted access except for Google scholar. I opted to choose Google scholar, searched for "coaching college football" and received 13,400 results. Among them, I found the top 5 journals and articles written about football coaching. The list includes: 1. College Coaches' Views about the Development of Successful Athletes: A Descriptive Exploratory Investigation, Journal article by Peter R. Giacobbi Jr., et al, Journal of Sport Behavior, Vol. 25, 2002. Retrieved from http://www.questia.com/googleScholar.qstdocId=5002469636 2. Performance, biochemical, and endocrine changes during a competitive football gam,. Journal article Hoffman, Jay R., et. al., Applied Sciences Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 34(11):1845-1853, November 2002. Retrieved from http://seab.envmed.rochester.edu/jaba/articles/2002/jaba-35-01-0001.pdf Part 6 Usenet Archives In searching from usenet archives, I first searched http://groups.google.com for list of archives available using the keywords "college football coach." This returned 127,000 hits. I found two relevant archives that contain posts about the research topic. These are: 1. http://groups.google.com/group/alt.sports.football.pro.pitt-steelers/browse_thread/thread/f636f322293de764/62043f70537c63bdlnk=st&q=coaching+football#62043f70537c63bd 2. http://groups.google.com/group/alt.sports.football.pro.oak-raiders/browse_thread/thread/b5e3fcf7db22a21a/a87ebdacb2d798f6lnk=st&q=coaching+football#a87ebdacb2d798f6 Part 7 Evaluate the Resources The resources I have gathered are factual and written by experts in football, and in coaching a team. Majority of the materials gathered from the search directories, specialized database, search engines are websites of legitimate football associations, foundations and institutions and coaching companies. Some of the sites were established by seasoned football writers and sportswriters. Football how-to's that were featured in other websites were written by experts in the field such as varsity coaches, team managers and contributing players. All information gathered is in keeping with the changing football statistics, news and games. The books and magazines or journals collected came from respectable libraries, the University of Berkeley and King County Library, and that alone gives credit to the collection. Furthermore, most of the researches are current with only one book that printed on 1971. Part 8 The Bibliography AFCA. Homepage. 18 April 2008 www.afca.com AllExperts.
