MilinderRecycle/ pg The question I am answering concerns Milinder Recycling Company's problem with new hires and the extremely high turnover rate. There are a variety of reasons for the high turnover rate and some of those reasons include the poor leadership, the weak communication between management and employees, the obsolete IT infrastructure and the substantial debt accrued to open new markets. These factors all affect employee morale. If employees suffer a low moral they probably not wish to stay with a company.

In Milinder's case, the turnover is especially concentrated in new hires. This could be for a number of different reasons."Leaving is only one event in a continuous relationship that begins when an individual is taken on by an employing organization and ends when this relationship is terminated." (Pettman, 1975, pg 77). If this statement is true, then at the beginning of the relationship, the expected standards should be set and communicated to the employee by the manager. In Milinder's situation some of the managers may be lacking in their communication skills and therefore may not be communicating the job requirements and expectations at the initial hiring of the candidate.

One solution to the lack of experience by the managers is an intense and ongoing training program. The managers need further training in how to communicate their expectations to the new hires.. Milinder's managers need training in communication but also in the hiring process. An option that the company may want to consider is putting in writing a hiring selection process. Such a high turnover rate could be caused by the hiring of "warm bodies".Milinder/ pg 2 "When it is difficult to recruit candidates and there is pressure to fill a job quickly, managers often lower their job qualifications and assume a high risk by hiring marginal candidates.

" (Roseman, 1981, pg 79). Whether it is high risk hiring, or lack of communication skills by the managers, both can be solved with further training and written standards.First Student Response It was nice that you established the fact that some of the managers had been promoted from within and that the ensuing poor leadership was one of the primary reasons why the company was experiencing high turnover. You even touched on a solution. When you wrote; "Since they chose to hire within the company they must implement the appropriate training to avoid the issue of inadequate leadership" my first reaction was "great".

Then you stopped. I felt as if you touched on the correct answer and then did not elaborate any further. It would have been nice to have a more complete answer. It was great for as far as it went!Second Student Response This was an extremely well written and researched discussion and it was quite enlightening. I especially enjoyed the conclusion and how you tied in Branham's remarks about a committed manager making a difference. You also ensured that you answered the question with two options (or solutions) which is what the assignment asked for.

You were also quite clear as to the reasons behind the employee turnover. Overall the paper stated the problem, incorporated references, provided solutions and came to a measured conclusion. Excellent job. REFERENCESPettman, B.O. (ed), Labour Turnover and Retention, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1975Roseman, E., Managing Employee Turnover, AMACOM, New York, 1981
