Terminal Objectives Program Philosophy in Managed Care Managed care in the world of health care has produced a dramatic change in the world of American health care. Applying the models that exist including health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, point of service plans and other managed care network forms is essential in today's health care. Their structure may differ in how services within managed care are delivered. The goals would in fact be quite similar. The BSHA program provides the methodologies and techniques to exemplify these services.

Managed health care in the more recent years has caused a call for managed care that focuses on safety, better and more accountable health care than from what managed health plans had become over the years. George Halvorson and George Isham, MD wrote an interesting piece describing this imperative need for managed care. Mr. Halvorson, to his credit, has two basic steps worthy of following, which will help what is now seen as an ailing health care system. Those two steps are creating overall care flow charts assigning accountability for each step in the care process and also devising a system supporting improved medical care in relation to each step in this process.

The fact that managing health care has to keep pace with the changes in health care itself must be addressed. This must be addressed in the fact that in order to manage health care risks we must have a link between systematic improvement for care and payment for that care. The work managed in the courses pursued would bring a realization that is mirrored in the writings of Halvorson and Isham in that; one thing that must be done is the re-engineering of health care systems. The reason, integration, a method that integrates all the elements of health care into a manageable formula must be considered in order to be of benefit to health care and to the patients which it serves.

Today's system hampers the most effective methods of health care delivery at all levels. One method for managing this would be an automated medical record; this provides better quality health care by providing all relevant patient information at the point of care. There are many things that should be included in such records, including all pertinent economic information relative to treatment costs, medical savings account balance, and benefit coverage if any would exist. An understanding of the level of insurance benefits is essential to health care management. Dr. Isham provides seven priorities in the management of health care.

This is in response to the need for a national health care strategy. Support of this strategy should be universal, and having a backbone for the framework of a national health care strategy will improve managed care from its very core and on out into the various branches. Health care quality and patient safety must be systematically improved. An improved marketing model for both buying and selling of health care sensitive to consumer needs, behaviors and incentives would also be integral to this framework.

Improving the population's health and preventing monopolies of health care along with other anti-competitive practices. This particular issue is one that prevents managed care from being beneficial all around. A health care framework for delivery to the uninsured should be created. Training, education, research and re-engineered health care delivery must also be integral to the changes made in health care management. Educational investment needs to be based on the engineering of a better system for resolving some differences in terms of professional standards.

The implementation of automated medical records will assist this process greatly.
