As speakers and writers, students will use oral and written language to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information.Motivation: The story is about a group of animal friends that play hide and seek and are discovered one by one. This allows the children to count the animals as they are discovered together during the story. After the story, the children will engage in a hide and seek game -like the characters in the book- counting the children found. The counting activity will be reinforced by the repetition of the game in the story and the class.

Students will be motivated to pay attention due to the involved nature of the counting. Students will also maintain focus during the activity due to the nature of the game, they must be participating in order to "find" the children. 9:00 Children will gather for storytime9:05 Teacher will count to ten aloud, the again asking children to count as a group with Teacher. This is the introduction to counting 1-5. 9:10 Teacher will read a story, asking students to help her count the friends. 9:15 Children will be divided into groups, "hiders" and "finders".

Just as in Hiding and seek, the "hiders" will hide, and the "finders" will look for the Hiders. "Hiders" group must be 5 in number. 9:18 Finders group sits at a desk with heads down, hiders hide! 9:20 Finders tell the teacher where to go to find the "hiders"; one at a time. Lining them up in front of the classroom, the children count all "hiders" each time one is found. 9:35 All "Hiders" found. Children count them aloud together! In-class Assessment: After all Hiders are found, the Teacher will go to individual tables and ask them as a group to count to five, then individually.

If there are any students having problems, the teacher will ask the group to work to help them. The teacher will then come back and ask the individual students that had problems to count to 5. Homework: Students are asked to bring 5 small items that can fit in their hand (pencils, candies, small toys, etc.) to show the class. Materials: Ten in the Meadow by John Butler
