Problem Based Learning in Medical Education Problem Based Education has gained popularity in the medical sciences with the advent of technological reforms, the researchers and learning associates finds it more suitable to conducted problem based exercises, so as to improve theoretical and practical approach of medical students. Problem Based Learning is efficient and effective mode of conveying the medical education in rational, comprehensive programs, the newly introduced technique has several advantages over traditional methods of teaching.
The modified version of learning that emphasis more on problem solving has certain objectives attached to it, firstly the technique desires further motivation of student's learning capabilities, and provide them with an opportunity to exercise them in easy manner, after having studied the problem itself. The problem based learning technique is based on adult learning theory, according to which the human absorbing capabilities can be enhanced by juggling their minds and concepts, which can be achieve by giving them a chance to handle and discuss problems.
Furthermore, the students are encouraged to mark their own learning goals, the scope of goals get broaden with experience problematic situations, the decision making capabilities can be improved by implementation of program based learning, the decision making activities further enhance their learning, and their critical and analytical approach towards the problem. Although Problem Based Learning is innovative and effectual exercise, 'however PBL does not offer a universal panacea for teaching and learning in medicine, and it has several well recognized disadvantages' (Diana F Wood.
, ABC of learning and teaching in medicine: Problem based learning). It has been observed that those students who have learned through problem based activities have better knowledge retention. The environment generated by previous learning methodology was not effective, and the involvement of students was restricted and controlled, the students were debarred from applying their creative thinking and problem solving techniques much because their nourishment was not being properly executed. The application of Problem Based Learning has proactive and conducive environment to uplift the academics capabilities of the students, 'PBL also generates a more stimulating and challenging educational environment' (Diana F Wood.
, ABC of learning and teaching in medicine: Problem based learning). The research has appreciated the beneficial effects achieved through general attributes of Problem Based Learning techniques. The highlighted features of Problem Based Learning techniques are following, 1. The technique develops and provides enough provisions for achieving active and improved learning and understanding of the students, furthermore the techniques also ensures progress over lifelong learning skills and its retention.2. The general skills and concepts of the students can be developed, and the desirable attitude of the students in this respect can be achieved for their future training. 3. The modified learning technique facilitates and supports comprehensive and integrated objectives of the curriculum.
The technique is more student friendly, and therefore their active participation can be achieved, the technique is equally favorable for the instructors, because for them it becomes easier to convey and achieve the learning goal.4. Deep learning can be achieved by implementation of Problem Based Learning, students are related their concepts with common activities, and can this way improve their understandings. 5. The constructive approach of the students can be achieved, and students can develop their knowledge framework more affluently by incorporating their effective learning.
The Problem based activities help to visualize and conceptualize the learn theory with practical life, and the execution of the theory can be exercised in convincing manner with reference to medical sciences.
