Extract of sample "Montage Is the Art and Technique of Motion-Picture Editing"

Montage is the art and technique of motion-picture editing in which contrasting shots or sequences are used to affect emotional or intellectual responses. It was developed creatively after 1925 by the Russian Sergei Eisenstein; since that time montage has become an increasingly complex and inventive way of extending the imaginative possibilities of film art. In still photography a composite picture, made by combining several prints, or parts of prints, and then rephotographing them as a whole, is often called a montage or a photomontage. ("montage." The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2008. Encyclopedia.com. 23 Mar. 2009 <http://www.encyclopedia.com>).

From oulipo to recombinant poetics Interaction with different forms of generative production enables one to dynamically explore emergent meaning. New forms of computer-based art can make it possible for participants to actively become engaged in aspects of the production of the work. Each “user” of a specifically authored computer-mediated system may have a quite different experience emerging through interaction. Yet, emergent systems can also be analog. There is an interesting commonality to generative literary, artistic, and musical production that is relevant to the OULIPO, Recombinant Poetics, as well as techno-audio remix culture.
In the following, I will compare and contrast approaches to combinatorics from the perspective of each of these fields of research.

OULIPO (Ouvroir de litérature potentielle — The Workshop for Potential Literature) “does not want to be considered a literary school, or to overtly advance specific ideologies or theories, its goals portray an understanding of literature that merits outline and critique”. In his illuminating book entitled OULIPO – A Primer of Potential Literature, Warren F. Motte, Jr., outlines the history of OULIPO, which was conceived at the initiative of Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais: It was born... on 24 November 1960, to be precise, the day of the first official meeting.
The ten founding members came from various disciplines: writers, mathematicians, university... (Seaman, Bill October 2001, OULIPO VS Recombinant Poetics Leonardo - Volume 34, Number 5, pp. 423-430).

Kuleshov and his peers felt that many aspects of filmmaking—from set design and acting to the very act of photography—were not specific to the medium.
