How to Change Hose ,Other than 2-inch Hose to Equivalent Lengths of 2-inch Hose Fire hose has consistently been the most used piece of equipment in the fire service. Water is the extinguishing agent most commonly used in fire fighting. Fire hose is the means of changing water from the source to the area of need. Fire hose is commonly available in the following sizes and is measured by internal diameter. (Couvillon, 2006, p33)
3/ 4 inch; 1 inch; 1/ 2 inch;. 2 1/ 2 inch; 3 1/ 2 inch; 4 inch; 5 inch; 6 inch
If a length of hose is of a diameter of less than 2 1/ 2 inch. We can determine its equivalent length in 2 inch hose by dividing the length of the hose by a conversion factor. (Sylvia and Casey, 2002, p 112)
The larger diameter hose length is divided by the factor to find the equivalent length of 21/2 inch hose, to change other sizes of hose to 2 1/2 inch hose, conversion rates are used. The conversion factors for changing to 2 inch hose is given below (Casey, 1970, p256).

A few suggestions that prove helpful while calculating hose lengths from one size to another:
1. Multiply the length of 3/ 4 inch hose by 340,to determine the equivalent length of a 2 inch hose
2. Multiply the length of 1 inch hose by 86 to determine the length of a 2 inch hose.
3. Multiply the length of 1 1/2 inch hose by 13 to determine the length of a 2 inch hose.
4. Multiply the length of 3 inch hose by 0.4 to determine the length of a 2 inch hose.
5. Multiply the length of 3 1/ 2 inch hose by 0.17 to determine the length of a 2 inch hose.
Example:
What is 1000 feet of 3 inch hose with 2 inch couplings equivalent to in 2 in hose
Ans: The factor for 3 inch hose is 2.5.
Therefore, 1000/ 2.5 = 4 00 feet of 2 inch hose.
