COMPANY RESEARCH PAPER: IT INDUSTRY Debarati Sengupta. This is an attempt to analysis the importance of good policies which can make or break one organization. For an organization to have a healthy growth it is very important that its employees are taken care of and also ensured that they have a healthy growth themselves. To understand its people and to frame the policies accordingly can make a huge amount of difference to what an organization presently is and what it can be in future. Now-a-days most of the big organizations pay a lot of attention towards their HR policies; especially the organizations which deal in IT; for them their workforce are their main asset. The better they manage their asset the better they perform in the industry. We can rightly say that a healthy workforce leads to a healthy business. It's the policies in each organization which either makes them a favorite or not so sought after. However it is very necessary that each organization should carve out some policies for their employees so that they have a feeling that they are taken care of. There are many such organizations which have done this beautifully well and are now reaping the success. One such organization is IBM. Not only has this organization seen a tremendous growth but has also become one of the most sought after organizations for IT professionals all over the world. IBM is undoubtedly one of the most sought after organizations for IT professionals all over the world. Whichever country we may consider and ask its IT professionals the reply will most of the time lay in favor of IBM. What makes it so Is it just the brand name Or is there something more to it If it had been just the brand name then it would not have gone so far in becoming one of the most favored organizations to work with. There is definitely more to it. A very tempting area is the diversity of domains in which it works; there are a lot of options available for one, after he/she joins the organization. The list goes on like this; Aerospace and defense, Automotive, Banking, Chemicals and Petroleum, Consumer Products, Education, Electronics, Energy and Utilities, Financial Markets, healthcare, Insurance, Life Sciences, Media and entertainment, Retail, Telecommunications, Travel and Transportation, Wholesale Distribution, Cross-Industry. The women work force is also not left behind. We can say there is something for satisfying everybody's needs. The driving force for women to join IBM is the fact that its policies are very considerate towards working women who also have a family to take care of. The organization understands that there may be times when the lady of the house cannot move out; for those difficult days there is an option for work-from-home the working hours are also flexible. These are definitely a boon for people who have responsibilities in their personal lives. The organization also thinks about the health needs of its people and has a very well developed gymnasium in almost all the office premises. One indication of good policies is if we are able to find a good number of employees who are with the organization for a long time. This indicates that they are too satisfied to think of a change in their work environments. Having spoken to an employee who has been with the organization since long, got a view of an insider and why the attrition rate is lower than many of its competitors. When asked why does he work there This is what he has to say "They are one of the best pay masters, and then the opportunity to go onsite is very often." Who doesn't love to earn money After all most of us work for money; and that's what is common throughout the world, however with due respect to all those people who work as volunteers or with NGOs. When asked about the work culture He says it to be "Cool, though there is pressure at times but the work environment is fun to work in. then on days when he doesn't have too much of work at office; he can plan for some other personal tasks to be completed. " He also said that he is a regular to the gymnasium and loves to workout and be in shape. He can very well adjust that within his working hours by smartly managing his work. This not only keeps the people healthy but also energetic throughout the day. We may also say that this gives its people to a very good reason to be regular to office. It is a fact that our office should be like our second home because there we spent the very valuable 8 to 9 hours of the day. If this place can be made a comfortable place to be in then we will have happy people working around. On being asked about the work that one does and how much they enjoy. This is what he has to say about ones' professional growth that there are a lot of different projects available and one can try and change into a one that suits their aptitude. Then there are offices at so many locations that one can even dare to think of settling in another city very easily. It is also very flexible for women as they can opt for a transfer based on the location where their husband's are. This is easy because IBM almost has a presence in all the major cities in the world. Apart from that there are a lot of opportunities for traveling to as foreign land for work related purpose, to the client sides; with their clientele spread over almost all the countries of the world it can be a very good experience of traveling while you are still working. I have asked him about what he thinks about his growth in the organization, both personally and professionally He was in all praises for the training programs that are provided to its people. They also provide a chance to go into diverse areas with diverse positions which not only widens one's knowledge but also gives a boost to one's career. IBM also provides world class trainings for its employees. They have a very well developed in -house training program as well as when required they also have trainings provided by external faculties. A person working has a lot of exposure and opportunity to learn a lot and different technologies. This is nothing less than a boon to the IT professionals. Those who are bored of working in a particular technology and want to shift to something new then they are also provided a chance to do so. This is a very positive move as it keeps the professionals interested in the work they are doing. Having asked him about the perks It seems that the organization is always on the move by coming up with new ideas and plans to reward its employees. They have a very exciting employee's referral program where-in the employees who refer their friends and relatives are rewarded once they get selected; the rewards are always very attractive. Apart from all that since they are part of a big brand name, there are a lot of facilities provided to them by various financial organizations as well. This organization surely knows how to treat its people. We can undoubtedly say that IBM is one of the most sought after organizations with a huge work force all of which striving hard to make a mark with their clients by coming up with new products and services. Working there is like a party time with a very vibrant work culture and a very energetic office ambiance. Occasional team parties add an icing to the cake. Life at IBM can be a real treat to life for the ones who know how to live life or can we say it teaches one how to live life Courtesy: the official site for IBM. Employees feedback. Read More
