As a matter of fact, US military is one of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel. It draws its manpower from a large pool of volunteers. It spends $550 billion annually to fund its military forces and appropriate approximately $160 billion to fund overseas contingency operation. The operations are majorly in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan among others (Borgwardz 81-5). Indeed the states are spending a lot on military operations. The spending is based on salaries of the soldiers and at the sane time weapons used during wars not to forget humanitarian service. If war comes to an end and soldier brought back home then this will mean a lot. The expenditure on war will reduce and more money will be in treasury. With more funds that will be saved, the US can have a paradigm shift. The soldiers will not be apparently resting in the barracks or just confined in the states because there is peace. The soldiers can be made to provide services that are productive to the states and at the same time helps in strengthening economic pillars of the people. The soldiers as is realized are specialist in other sectors of economy. They can be taken back to there areas of specialization to ensure that the states have the maximum number of employees in each sector. This will ensure that there is efficiency in service delivery. Other military officers can be given technical training to work in industries. The saved money will be used to export raw materials from there sources and be brought to industries. New industries can be established with an aim of producing commodities that are currently being exported by US (Pine 89-92). By doing this, the states will be producers than consumers and enjoy all be benefits the producers enjoy. They will be exporting and earning foreign exchange; at the same time they will be creating opportunity for money generation. Other soldiers may also be trained in research and innovation. In the field of research they will be doing exploration on the possible and potential areas that the United State has not exploited. With this they will be expanding the scope and horizon of the level of research and technology of the states. It will make the states to go along way in terms of resources utilization. The military officers having been exposed to several civilizations overseas have knowledge from all corners of the world the experienced they have gained may be tapped to improve the United State and to see how they rank as compared to other countries of the different regions of the world (Oatis 800-9). In the attempt to integrate ideas from different places, the states will be indeed leading in terms of globalization and it will reflect all civilization in the world. With that the philosophy of unity amidst diversity will be embodied in the states. Having been exposed to several spheres of lives the US soldiers may be shifted to humanitarian services. They can be advocators for humans to accept every human being for plainly just being another human being, ignoring and abolishing biased social views, prejudiced view points or mind sets. In there advocacy, they should campaign for ethics, kindness, benevolence, sympathy and other accepted virtues to guide human life. This will go along way in perpetuating peace in the world and creating employment for the soldiers who will be doing this on a volition basis. Instead of attacking countries in wars, US soldiers can shift to provide aid or logistical assistance provided for humanitarian purposes typically on response to humanitarian crisis including natural disasters and man made disasters. This will change there distorted image on war and give them a good admirable public reputation that US will be the epitome of peace and good neighborhood. They should have a primary objective of saving lives; alleviating suffering and maintaining dignity. The soldiers may also be the campaign agent on issues touching on the climate change which is one of the contemporary issues. It is significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to million of years (James 789-90). It may be change in average weather condition or the distribution of events around this change. When a region is affected by climate change then a lot of expertise measures must be taken to ensure that peoples lives are not negatively affected. US soldiers can around the world take it as there mission to educate masses on the best practices they can take to adapt to the situation. For example, people of the region affected by climate change are taught on how to build resilience to climate change. They should also teach nations on the ways through which they can mitigate the climate change in the theme moving towards a low carbon society. The military officers may also focus on ensuring that the world’s population is not vulnerable to food security. Food security refers to the availability of food and one’s access to it (James 44). A house hold is considered food secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. Food security exists when all people, at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food security includes at a minimum the ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods and assured ability to acquire acceptable food in socially acceptable ways that is without resorting to emergency food supplies scavenging stealing or other coping strategies. Most population of the world suffers as a result of food security. People in developing countries face famine and hunger which are both rooted in food insecurity. The chronic food insecurity translates into high degree of vulnerability to famine and hunger. The US can ensure food security to presuppose elimination of that vulnerability. They can also stage war and campaign on global warming. Global warming refers to the rising average temperature of earth’s atmosphere and oceans and its projected continuation (Borgwardz 88). They can tell the world that concentration of green house gases is produced by human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuel. And that this have a far reaching effects like species extinction due to shifting temperature regime and changes in agricultural yield. They may propose possible responses to global warming. For example they can propose mitigation to reduce emissions. It reduces amount of future climate change. IPCC defines mitigation as activities that reduce greenhouse gases emission or enhance the capacity of carbon sink to absorb GHGS from the atmosphere. The personnel can also be trained on Geo-engineering. This human resource will be very effective towards removing green house gases from the atmosphere or reflect incoming solar radiation back to space. It involves a range of techniques to remove carbon (IV) oxide from the atmosphere or to reflect incoming sunlight. Little is known about effectiveness, costs or potential side effects or geo-engineering options. The environmental challenges facing industrial companies and governments throughout the world are numerous and complex. Most governments and industrial companies now clearly realize and embrace the paradigm that environmental issues are intertwined with social/ cultural and socioeconomic issues. In fact, social and cultural concerns may far outweigh all other factors as industry and government make critical decisions regarding environmental issues. This move can be best diffused to the world by the military soldiers. Promoting economic growth with environmental and human health safeguards in place seems to be the path forward for most governments. Decades of environmental mismanagement have created severe legacy issues throughout the developed and developing world. At the crux of this challenge are the current energy policies: economic growth demands energy and the choices for government – e.g., fossil fuel-based energy, renewable energy sources, and hybrid systems – drive related environmental management strategies. The two huge tasks facing governments are: (1.) determining how to clean up legacy problems, restore natural resources, and achieve human health protection; and (2.) designing strategies to allow for future growth, while protecting the environment, maintaining biodiversity, safeguarding human health, and preserving cultural/ social values. This results in a very complex decision network for governments with varied experiences. A regulatory framework that leverages good science yet is targeted at supporting each country’s social and cultural values is an essential ingredient. Is the Western experience an adequate model for the developing world? Missteps in these arenas, as evidenced in some countries, have created uncertain processes and unpredictable development and investment scenarios for industry, thus retarding economic growth (Anderson. pg.45). The challenges faced by governments become even more complex when transboundary-multinational issues come into play, which is the case for issues ranging from global warming and invasive species, to marine transportation-oil spill accidents. At the center of major global environmental challenges for industry are energy strategies, energy projects, other natural resource exploitation, and designing manufacturing life cycles to minimize future impacts. The mineral resource industries (mining and oil and gas) have generally embraced the concepts of sustainable development and preservation biodiversity, but putting sustainability and biodiversity concepts into play is a “work-in progress” for most companies. How to deploy a uniform, yet adaptive corporate environmental strategy across much geography has become a major challenge. The economics of oil and gas exploration, production, and development are solid and the technology for operating in remote locations onshore and in deeper waters offshore have improved tremendously. Energy development and environmental protection can, in fact, coexist. Nevertheless, the industry still faces major challenges in balancing favorable economics with urgent and unrelenting environmental and social scrutiny (Edward 679). Uneven approaches to global warming mitigation and the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions define a new dynamic around define a new dynamic around the globe. Resource exploitation, largely unconstrained geographically in the past, has encountered a new complexity, where some locations may be “off limits” to hydrocarbon and mineral resource development. At the same time, the added dimension of today’s political and socioeconomic situation in the post-9/11 world has compounded an already complex set of stakeholder issues. Military officer in US should be working with its government and industrial clients worldwide to assist with foreseeing, understanding, and managing such complex environmental challenges. By strategically applying sound science and technology, technology transfer and capacity building, we continue to bring value to our clients’ diverse set of environmental challenges.
