College The Military Draft Should Not Be Rein d Thesis ment The military draft existed years back and was helpful tothe nation due to wars that continue to occur. Protection of the state was a priority and the military had few men who would go to fight for the country. Therefore, the government came up with a draft, the military draft that would ensure that the military had enough people and that the country was assured of its safety. The draft stated that all men who were eighteen years of age to twenty five had to be included in the military force. They were to undergo training for a few months before they were ready for war. The draft ensured that these young men were enlisted in the military force. It was compulsory the young men to be in the military as the few in the military and the volunteers could not sum up to a number that would ensure the country’s safety. Refusal of anyone to be inducted to the military, would lead to severe consequences, like lack of jobs and funds for college. This way, most young people joined the military, trained and when wars came up, they went out to fight for their nation. Thus, the government ensured that they had a strong enough military for wars like the world war. The military draft today should not be upheld. It is a draft that was used a long time ago for reasons that were important to the state. However, today, retaining the military draft would lead to more negative effects than positive ones. The government has discussed the draft a few times in congress. Coming back to the draft would lead to losses like jeopardizing the futures of most young people; wars are less today and more funds would be used to ensure that the ones, who enrolled, were maintained. These are but a few reasons that would make the draft a heavy task. The following is evidence to support my thesis First, it is important to note that the military draft was helpful back then due to the reoccurrence of wars and because the military had few people. However, the military today has had quite a success. So many people have volunteered to join the military as an occupation. The number of people in the military force is not little. This is one of the reasons why upholding the draft would not be necessary (Scherer 2). The military has enough people who are experienced and well trained and are ready to fight for the country in case of anything. The force already fully represents the nation well, thus retrying the draft would not be important. Secondly, the draft would require the government to spend so much, which is unnecessary. As said earlier, the draft required so many people to enroll to the military. This would lead to a huge number of young people who need to be maintained and trained in the military. So much money would have to be spent to maintain the number of young people who joined the force (Pickering 2). Also, the kind of training and the facilities required would be doubled, or even tripled to ensure each recruit was well equipped to join the military force. This is another main reason why taking on the military draft would incur a loss to the state. Thirdly, the draft, if picked up, would jeopardize the futures of so many young people in the country, from men to women. Each young person has plans and dreams to reach for the futures. The country needs more doctors daily, lawyers, business men and women, among others. The young people aged eighteen to twenty five were able bodied and in school, studying to achieve their dreams and improve the economy of the country (Congressional Digest 83). Forcefully enrolling most of this young people to the military force meant that the country would lose the labor force for other many occupations. This scarcity would eventually jeopardize the economy of the state. Another reason why the draft would not be fit if replayed is that, it is seen as a panic move. The country, like every other country has a military force to ensure the security of all citizens is upheld. However, enrolling so many young people to the military as they wait for any occurrence of war or threat to the country meant that the country feared for its safety. Other measures should be placed to cover the risks in case of war, like an existent military. Upholding the draft would mean that the country was at risk of war and therefore so many people needed to change their lives to wait saving the country. More reason as to why the military draft should not be upheld is that, it would be disastrous to the whole country So many young people involved in wars and introduces forcefully to the military force would cause some of them stress. Parents would suffer depression due to losing the lives of their loved ones in case of deaths. Moreover, when so many people go to war, most times, they lose lives. In this case, the number of lives lost would be more because the young people introduced to the military were not in the first place willing to join the military force. Though training is done before, there is no assurance that the young people have the will power to live when sent to war. Another reason why the draft should not be picked up is that, wars are no longer as frequent as back then. When the military draft was in place, there was the world war, the civil war and the state had so much to protect. They had to prioritize the nation’s safety and to do this; many people had to be enrolled in the military. Back then, few people wanted to go to war. Thus the government settled for the compulsory enrollment of young men into the military. However, the world is modernized now, there are fewer wars. Countries settle issues through talks and agreements. Thus, the draft would be a waste of man power. The government also takes into consideration the society and the opinion of the citizens. They represent the opinion of the majority (Wagner 1). Most citizens would not want their children to be taken away for training for an unknown course in the name of security when there is no risk. The following are reasons why some would support the draft Some people would prefer the military draft to be upheld for reasons that are important to them and to the nation. To begin with, these people think that upholding the military draft ensured the country was safe because the country had many people who were ready to fight for the protection of the citizens. More people would have trained as military and thus the safety of the citizens was assured. The number of people in the military in this case mattered most. Another reason why some would want to uphold the draft is that it was the duty of citizens to serve their country. Enrolling so many young people to the military force would just as well mean that these young men and women were serving their country. Another reason why some people would want the draft retained is that, it ensured that the country was ready in case of anything. If anything like war came up, the country would be ready to fight for peace and ensure the safety of the country. If the draft wasn’t upheld, the country would be risking the safety of all citizens. Another reason would be that, few people in the country volunteered to be part of the military force. Therefore, if young people were enrolled compulsorily, the military would be strong and able bodied enough to secure the country. Men and women would be enrolled to the military and thus the military would be viable for the safety of the nation. Another reason that some may consider when supporting the draft, is that, when the military has a large number of people in the force, other countries would feel threatened and their leaders would highly refrain from going to war with this particular country due to an amicably large number of military men and women. Below are reasons to show that the reasons for upholding the draft are not solid It is not necessary to uphold the draft as the military already had enough people, unlike before when very few people volunteered to join the force. Also, the military was already trained and were ready to fight for their country. Another reason to refute the ones who upheld the draft is that, there are more ways to serve the country than being in the military in overly large numbers. The safety of the citizens is thus assured as the military is already well set and ready to serve the citizens of the state. Also, another reason is that, when a country has a strong military, other countries might fear going to war with them. However, it was more likely for countries with a strong military to try and overpower other nations. This is a negative thing as it would lead to chaos between them and other countries as they try to gain more and more power. The pros to support the draft compared to the cons are few. The reasons stated above in support of the draft are not solid enough. They would lead to loss of focus for the country as they would put in so much labor force in the military and spend so much. The country has an economy to build, and the young people are the ones to keep doing this. The military in place is already handy to protect the state and therefore, they did not need more citizens enrolling to the force. Conclusion It is clear that the military draft should not be picked up. As shown in the reasons above, the country would lose much money, jeopardize the futures of many, waste resources and deteriorate the economy if the draft was upheld. It is important to note that the peace and safety of the citizens is a priority. This is why there is an existent military to ensure that all risks to the nation do not reach the citizens. There are fewer wars today. Countries have better ways to solve problems and disagreements. However, the military is in place for safety, protection and peace in the nation. In conclusion, the military draft was back then an important law that saved the country on a lot.
