"The Protest Psychosis: How Schizophrenia Became a Black Disease" is a great example of a paper on the disorder. It is said to affect at least one percent of the world’s population.

There are different types of schizophrenia which include:

    1. Disorganized and
    2. Catatonic schizophrenia
  1. Symptoms

Symptoms include disorganized speech, catatonic behaviors, delusions, disorganized speech or lack of speech, hallucinations among others.

  1. Effects

In his book, Metzi (2011) state’s that schizophrenia has dangerous effects on the people suffering from the illness. Schizophrenic people are most likely to commit suicide so; any mention of suicide by them should be taken seriously. Schizophrenic people often have a problem with alcohol and drug abuse. This is caused by the fact that they try to relieve the symptoms or even by trying self-medication. Schizophrenic people tend to isolate themselves thus disrupting their relationship with both the public and their family members. Generally, people suffering from schizophrenia are unable to go about their day-to-day activities.

  1. Treatment

Generally, schizophrenia is treated through medication depending on the type. Medication includes drugs like risperidone, aripiprazole, quetiapine, and olanzapine. However, these drugs have side effects and should be taken as directed by the doctor. These side effects include weight gain which is caused by high sugar levels, dizziness, and increased appetite among others.

  1. Conclusion

In conclusion, schizophrenia is a manageable mental illness that can be controlled if only the patient takes medication as prescribed by the doctor without abusing them. Therapy also helps in recovery.
