Importance of Strategic Leadership, Planning, and Management in Health Care - Essay Example

          As a leader in the healthcare organization, the alarming consequence of unproductive leadership is the decreasing numbers of staff including nurses. Leaders should know how to manage human resources because they are fundamental in achieving organizational goals. Since retention of staff is one of the crucial areas that leaders must pursue, the competencies of a leader involve personnel management, conflict management, staff coaching, and teamwork. In addressing the three areas such as personnel management, conflict management, and staff coaching, communication and motivation must be employed. Contino (2004) indicates that inadequate staffing requires cooperation and a healthy working relationship. Thus, planning involves motivating staff through recognizing their effort and encouraging them to perform better; addressing employees’ diversity to solve conflict through management training that includes improving their communication skills and dealing with various personalities; staff coaching, which contains the assessment of employees’ strength and weakness.

Furthermore, leaders must possess the ability to form effective teams. To encourage teamwork, teams should have a clear purpose, roles, leadership, and evaluation of their performance -- individual or team (Price & Scowcroft, 2011). This formation leads to the retention of effective and efficient members of an organization.
