"The Population of Focus: Diabetic People" is a perfect example of a paper on diabetes mellitus. After going through the CDC (2020) website, I identified diabetic individuals as a population of focus. Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body's response to insulin is inappropriate, or it cannot produce enough of it.Demographic and health concernsToday, the prevalence of diabetic people in the United States remains significantly high. By 2018, 10.5% of the population, which constituted 34.

2 million people had diabetes. Out of the number, 1.6 million individuals had type 1 diabetes, including adolescents and children. Out of 34.2%, only 26.8% were diagnosed, while 7.3% were not. The number of seniors with diabetes remains high, making more than half of those living with diabetes in the US. Recently, the number of youths diagnosed with diabetes has been increasing, whereby a 2014 to 2015 report shows that 210,000 youths were diagnosed with diabetes. In the same report, Alaskan natives were found to have high rates of diabetes, while non-Hispanic whites had a lower level of diabetes in terms of ethnicity.

Another demographic factor to consider for diabetes condition is the cost, which also remains high. For instance, the total diagnosis of the disorder in 2017was $327 billion, with $90 billion accounting for reduced productivity while $237 billion was for direct medical costs (American Diabetes Association, 2020).Moreover, health concerns for the diabetic population involve complications and risk factors of individuals with diabetes. Examples of complications include neuropathy, cardiovascular diseases, retinopathy, foot damage, depression, and nephropathy.

Further, risk factors include weight, age, and personal or family history (CDC, 2017). As age increases, the chances of developing diabetes increase while increased weight makes it challenging to control blood sugar. Diabetes is also genetically transmitted, and therefore one is likely to develop it if a family member has previously been affected. A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diets are also other factors that contribute to the development of diabetes as they may lead to overweight.Nursing science, health determinants, and epidemiologic, genomic, and genetic dataManagement of the diabetic population depends on various factors.

For instance, nursing science involves a multidimensional lens that explores better ways to deliver care by merging human, natural, and applied science. It, therefore, provides a basis for aspects such as education and solutions for managing diabetes. Further, if clinicians understand health determinants affecting the diabetic population, they can then mobilize self-care management, whereby individuals can engage in activities that help improve health outcomes (Rivich et al., 2019). Moreover, epidemiologic factors help in understanding the biology of causing factors, complications, and risk factors.

This makes it easier to come up with appropriate solutions. For instance, if one knows that overweight makes it challenging to control insulin, then a solution such as advocating for weight loss can help reduce weight and ease complications of diabetes. Additionally, with genomics, experts can understand diseases by determining complete DNA sequences (Siobhan et al., 2016). The genomic data obtained can then be used by clinicians to diagnose, treat, and prevent the development of the progression of diabetes.

Genetics also plays a role in type 2 diabetes development. For instance, scientists link some mutations with the development of the diabetes condition. Therefore, genetic data can be used to personalize the treatment of a disease such as diabetes through testing and help reduce adverse health events.Solution overviewThe evidence-based solution to diabetes condition identified is the application of healthy behavior theories such as social cognitive theory (SCT) or social-ecological model (SEM).

The SCT theory suggests that one's self-efficacy to accomplishing particular expectancies influences health outcomes. As a result, using SCT as a solution to diabetes problem help individuals predict their health conditions better, adhere to treatment, and manage appropriate glycemic control. On the other hand, the SEM theory deals with reciprocal interactions at different levels that affect health behavior. For instance, how a diabetic patient interacts with his or her family or health system determines treatment adherence (Hilliard et al., 2016).PICOT statementIn individuals with diabetes diseases (Population/problem), engaging in health behavior theories (intervention) compared to usual care (comparator) improves treatment adherence and controlling glycemic levels (outcome) during diabetes treatment.

Promoting health care equity by health policies and goalsThe World Health Organization (2020) considers healthy policies as actions, decisions, and plans to achieve set health care goals. Healthy behavioral interventions to diabetes incorporate goals and policies that promote equal care to all patients. The interventions focus on personal behavior. Clinicians impart knowledge on various aspects, including cause and preventive activities that affect diabetes conditions. The knowledge and skills provided depend on the needs of patients and therefore promote equity among the patient population.

The difference is determined by an individual's self-efficacy to understand and apply the knowledge provided.-2
