Executive summary affiliation Executive summary Introduction Respiratory diseases are associated with many complications and are among the world leading causes of deaths. Numerous babies and older kids in the United States have quite a lot of mild infections of the respiratory system year-after-year. These infections are mild and often disappear in 4 to 10 days, but if they are not handled urgently and in the correct manner they can at times be severe. This indicates that there is a need to attend to the children in the United States since if the facilities available are adequate then the respiratory cases would not be on the rise. Moreover, the main cause of respiratory disorders is air pollution. Impurities in the air bring about augmented acute respiratory illness, augmented occurrence of respiratory infections and symptoms, incidents of a longer period, and the function of the lung is lowered in the infants. This paper will discuss the purpose, the target population, the benefits, the budget and the basis for evaluation of the pediatric pulmonary clinic project. The purpose Through this project, both the inpatient and outpatient pediatric patients suffering from respiratory infections will be attended to with the aim of managing, treating, and minimizing the occurrence of the infections. This will aid in reducing mortality rates of infants due to respiratory disorders. This project will help to diagnose respiratory diseases comprising of bronchitis, pneumonia, wheezing, and asthma, among others. Besides, this facility will attend to the children suffering from apnea that is a condition that makes the children forget or stop to breathe. Also, an inherited condition known as Cystic fibrosis that causes mucus to build up in the lungs will be treated, and technology-dependent infants will also be attended to. Also, immunizations will be provided to the infants so as to prevent them from developing respiratory infections. Also, campaigns to ensure that impurities are not released to the environment will be carried out. Finally, services like flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB) and pulmonary function testing will be provided by the clinic. FFB is a service that allows an inside examination of the lungs using a fiberoptic scope (Rubin & Bush, 2007). The target population The proposed project of the pediatric pulmonary clinic is to provide services to the children within the United States population. The children are the main target stream of this project. This is because at birth the lungs are not fully developed in pediatrics, their airways are still narrow, they tend to breathe in a greater proportion of air than adults, and their low heights make them more exposed to pollutants that are heavier than air. Therefore, this makes them more vulnerable to respiratory problems. According to Chernick & Mellins, (2004), acute respiratory contaminations are among the top 10 causes of death in the United States and are accountable for 56,000 deaths per annum. Although the mortality rate of pneumonia among the children fell by 97%, the infectious diseases of the respiratory system are on the rise and are the main reasons of pediatric hospitalization in the United States. Averagely, respiratory tract infections lead to 36,000 deaths and 200, 000 hospitalizations annually. For instance, the H1N1 influenza pandemic in the year 2009 caused about 12, 270 deaths with 1,270 being children below 18 years of age from April 2009 to March 2010 (Thompson et al., 2003). This is a high number since the overall population of infants in the United States is not high. The benefits of the project. This program will help to reduce the number of hospitalization and mortality rate due to respiratory complications among the children. This will be attained through the services like the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB) and pulmonary function testing that will be provided by the clinic to detect a respiratory problem earlier before it turns out to be chronic. Besides, the immunization programs that the clinic will provide through giving of vaccines will aid to minimize the occurrence of respiratory diseases. Vaccines provide protection against microorganisms that cause a disease and, therefore, the immune system of the children will be prepared to prevent or fight any respiratory infection. Additionally, the campaigns by the clinic will assist to minimize the release of impurities to the environment, and this will provide a safer environment for the development of the infants. The budget justification. In order to make the project a success, funds are requested with the aim of supporting Dr. Ball, who is the main investigator. He will make sure that the goals of the project are met in a well-timed method, with honesty, accomplished within compliance regulations and the budgeted amounts. Also, he will be supervising the student research assistant and participants in the environment campaign projects and the collection of data. These responsibilities will consume 20% of his time dedicated to the project during the academic years for year 1-3. Additional funds are needed to fund a single student research assistant ($10/hour x 15 hours/week x 24 weeks=$3600). The student will be maintaining the survey database, collecting survey data, and analyzing and reviewing the data. A fiberoptic scope needs to be acquired so as to carry out flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB) which is a service that allows an inside examination of the lungs. Around 30 participants will be paid $100 for being part of the environmental campaign annually. The campaign will involve informing the public on the safeties of making the environmental a safe environment free from pollutants. It will also advice manufacturing companies on methods of reducing air pollution. It’s a one-day event every year, and this costs will cater for their Salaries, travel expenses, maintenance cost, and purchases of materials. Also, a laptop needs to be acquired for entering data, and it is pro-rated at 80% of the total cost. Clinical supplies including vaccines, syringes, and gloves are required for administering the vaccines and medication to the affected children. The total budget for supplies per annum is projected at $1,000. The basis upon which the project will be evaluated. The pediatric program clinic is aimed at ensuring that the cases of children receive adequate treatment of the respiratory disease and to minimize the occurrence of the diseases. The project will be evaluated according to the desired indicators, activities, and outcomes that have been developed in the course of the planning the project. The activities will show the strategies that the project will offer so as to lead to the intended outcomes. The outcomes will measure how successful the project has been if the end results match with the desired outcomes. Indicators will indicate if the project is making any progress and in what degree.
