"The Health Care Job Shadowing Experience" is a good example of a paper on the health system.
I think experience is very important for learning and professional practice. Through experience one is able to apply the learned knowledge in practical situations thus help in solving problems in society. I, therefore, think allowing students to engage in activities that grow experience such as job shadowing, field attachments, practical classes, and exchange programs can really help in building knowledge. In this paper I will be highlighting more on my job shadowing experience, the knowledge and experience gained as well as how the same will impact my future practice as a pharmacist.
I did my Health Care Professional Shadowing Experience Program at Aspen Dental with a dentist called Dr. Shaheera. I must say the experience was not only interesting but also an eye-opener to me as a future pharmacist. By working closely with Dr. Shaheera in everything she did at the facility, I have learned a lot of things that are relevant to practice and which are not directly taught in class. I now understand the challenges that doctors and other professionals in the medical field have to go through when handling patients from different walks of life as well as cultural backgrounds. Some patients for instance have cultural beliefs as well as faiths that are just deep and as such the practitioner has to find a way of balancing professionalism while at the same time respecting the patients’ beliefs.
I learned that in order to successfully assist patients, medical practitioners have to do everything possible in the name of their patients. Dr. Shaheera for instance was always present for her patients, encouraged them to be strong, smiled, and made stories with them. This I learned allowed to patients with her and share every symptom and treatment progress which in turn assisted her in deciding on the next course of management. By expressing empathy and care for patients, they are able to appreciate the efforts being made towards their well-being and as such be in good mental states. On this aspect of empathy, Dr. Shaheera was and will remain to be my role model as through her I have learned that patients need to be understood very well in order for their conditions to be well managed.
Another thing that I learned from the health care job shadowing experience at Aspen is that teamwork is very important. The technicians, assistants, and office managers all worked together as a team in supporting the doctor’s work. Considering that the patients come with different conditions, are of all ages, cultures, and faiths, teamwork is of particular importance in providing the necessary support and synergy to be able to handle all effectively. I also had to work as a team member and thus gained team-building skills which I will be carrying with me into my future professional practice as a pharmacist. Indeed no man is an island.
In conclusion, therefore, I have come to appreciate the importance of experience through the healthcare job shadowing program. I was able to learn and apply new knowledge to situations that were not taught in class but are very necessary for practice. Doing everything for the patient, giving them hope, problem-solving skills, working as a team member, and being prepared for different kinds of clients are some of the new things I learned. The experience has had a tremendous impact on me and I believe will be very important in my couture professional practice.
