It is important to mention that there are three main groups concerning the peculiarities of the child’s nutrition. Ellyn Satter introduces the division of responsibility for infants, for older babies and for toddlers through adolescents (Satter, 2014).
As for the infants, it is worse to admit that parents are responsible for what their child eats, and the baby is liable for the amount of eaten food (Satter, 2014). At this age, parents choose “breast- or formula- feeding” and give information about the timing, tempo, frequency, and amount of meal to their infant (Satter, 2014). Concerning the older babies, it should be mentioned that parents chose what to eat together with time and place, while the child is responsible for the amount of eaten food and for the desire of eating a suggested meal (Satter, 2014). The division of responsibilities for toddlers is practically the same as for older children. It is important to admit that parents should trust children in the question of their responsibilities in nutrition, and do not force them to eat more or less (Satter, 2014). Parent’s task is to feed their child in an appropriate way, while a child’s job is to eat (Satter, 2014).
Application: Scenario 2
The problem is that parents think that their child eats too much. It is important to know that baby is responsible for the amount of food she wants to eat (Satter, 2014). It is the parents’ mistake to make Sally eats less. Such a situation makes her scared that force a child to eat even more.
It is relevant to feed this girl the way she wants and to try representing easy-going and positive behavior within the process of feeding (Satter, 2005). What is more, it is important to talk with the child and do not ignore her desires (Satter, 2005). Parents in such a situation need to keep the nerve and allow the girl to grow in her own way (Satter, 2005). Also, it is considered to trust your child and to show a good example of behavior within the eating process.
Personal Experience
I have a chance to observe the situation when 3 years old boy Mark eats too little, and his parents have been worried about it. Still, they have represented the appropriate behavior and have shown a good division of responsibilities concerning his child’s nutrition. The matter is that they have tried not to demonstrate the discomposure to their child. There has been no compulsory nutrition or strong remarks on the amount of food that their child eats. They have tried to show to Mark their own example of appropriate eating, and have been positive concerning the question of mealtime and amount of meal. They have remembered that it is important to trust their child in the amount of nutrition and try not to force him. They have used family meals and reduced food handouts between the main mealtimes.
