Annotated Bibliography: Health Sciences and Medicine Arthritis Annotated Bibliography: Health Sciences and Medicine Arthritis Lorig, K., Fries, J. F., & Gecht, M. R. (2000). The arthritis help book: A tested self-management program for coping with arthritis and fibromyalgia. Cambridge, Mass: Perseus. In this health, help book about arthritis, Kate Lorig and James F. mentions that there are over one hundred and twenty different kinds of arthritis all of which have something to do with one or more joints in your body. The word arthritis can be a little misleading as the arth- part in Greek means “joint” and itis- means “inflammation” or “infection” so the literal meaning of arthritis is “inflammation of the joint” but there is a problem with the literal definition as not all arthritis cases present themselves with an inflammation in the joint. A better definition would be “problems with the joint or the ligaments tendons and muscles around the joint.” Other than that the book also talks about types of arthritis like; Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. It also talks about exercises and the preventive measures a suffering patient should take. The authors of this book used information from sources like the Arthritis Foundation as well as by other authentic references and that’s why it is credible. It contributes to my research by explaining the definition written in layman’s terms which helps me understand the questions I had about what arthritis really meant. Myasoedova, E., Crowson, C. S., Kremers, H. M., Therneau, T. M., & Gabriel, S. E. (January 01, 2010). Is the incidence of rheumatoid arthritis rising?: results from Olmsted County, Minnesota, 1955-2007. Arthritis and Rheumatism, 62, 6, 1576-82. The data charts shown in this book show that in the time from 1995 to 2007 the incidence of Rheumatoid Arthritis increased moderately in women in all age groups, with the reasons still unknown. In January 2005 the prevalence was 0.72% from 0.62% which was an increased estimate from 1.3 million US adults affected by rheumatoid arthritis to 1.5 million adults affected in the US. This article is credible because it gives a set of figures making the research more authentic, because of the data being provided by the book Arthritis & rheumatism written by a group of reliable, professional doctors. This article provided the prevalence data I needed for my research and it contributes well to it because of the statistics being involved proving the theory of arthritis in women to be in larger levels as relevant. Sutton, A. L. (2010). Arthritis sourcebook: Basic consumer health information about the risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, gout, infectious arthritis, and auto-immune disorders associated with arthritis, along with facts about medications. Detroit, MI: Omnigraphics. This book consists of basic health information about the risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Juvenile Arthritis, Gout, Infectious Arthritis, and Autoimmune Disorders Associated with Arthritis. Along with several facts about medications they may take, surgeries that sufferers might need, and self-care techniques to manage pain and it gives many tips on living with a disease like arthritis. I found this book useful to find information about learning more about this disease and the symptoms which one may show when they suffer from it. Not only is this book credible for the vast amount of information it holds, it also provides techniques and tips for encountering this disease. This book is important to the research being carried out as it provides an insight into the number of different types of arthritis and it has listed quite a few of them in the book according to its symptoms in an organized manner which has proven to be very helpful to understand the issues faced by patients. It has also added into my research the many other ways to be pain free from sources other than just surgery and medication. Septic arthritis, bacteria, pseudomonas species, clinical sepsis, cannula, LOA Thanni; Dept of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, College of Health Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Sagamu, Ogun State., OB Ogunfowora; Dept of Paediatrics, College of Health Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Sagamu, Ogun State, MB Fetuga; Dept of Paediatrics, College of Health Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo  This peer reviewed article states that rheumatoid arthritis’s potential cause still remains unknown.  It was shown earlier that arthritis is a disease that arises from infections but recent reports have linked it to a genetic origin. But this article puts forward that neither of these factor solely is an accepted cause of the disease itself. This article relates to all the causes of the disease itself and presents a thorough study on the mechanism of arthritis. This article is credible because of it being peer reviewed by professionals in the field, making it a more reliable with the main topic being septic arthritis which is one of the common types of arthritis. The article helps my research about giving the information about the potential causes of this disease and providing more insight about the research that has been put into the article. Magee, D. J., Zachazewski, J. E., & Quillen, W. S. (2009). Pathology and Intervention in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation. St. Louis, Mo: Saunders/Elsevier. Disability reduction and prevention programs for people with arthritis and other rheumatic conditions happen to reduce long-term pain and disability but reach only a fraction of their target audience. In this book there is a chapter namely, “Management of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis”, chapter 28, which tells us the ways by which one can overcome the very painful disease and let them live through their daily routine at ease. This is a peer reviewed book and is credible because the authors are professionals in this field who have compiled many ideas into a single book together proving to be a very helpful resource for the research. The book provides the necessary data needed for researching about the interventions of this disease which was needed for the research being carried out. Read More
