Currently, healthcare policymakers and other stakeholders involved in the policymaking and enacting are experiencing various policy-related issues. One of the main policy issues experienced is related to the high influx of immigrant population that is entering into the United States. Due to this increase in the immigrant population the government has to make decisions regarding whether it is their responsibility to be concerned about the health and wellbeing of the immigrant population. They even have to sort out issues regarding the distribution of resources for the health and wellbeing of the immigrant population.

I personally believe that the government should be the one responsible for taking care of the health and wellbeing of the immigrant population and the resources allocated to this population should be equal to the resources being allocated to other United States citizens. I formed this opinion on the basis of a cost and benefit analysis. The cost of not providing for the health and wellbeing of the immigrant population is quite higher as compared to the benefits that can be reaped from providing them with healthcare. I am personally highly confident and comfortable in discussing policy-related issues with my teachers in the classroom as well as out of the classroom. I even find it easy to discuss the issues with other students who study with me regardless of their backgrounds.

The main barrier while discussing such issues with other members of society is the cultural gap. In our educational institutes, people come from different cultures and different individuals tend to communicate differently (Brunner, 2010). Some of them find it threatening to discuss the issues directly and some feel that they are being targeted when these issues are being discussed. For example, a person belonging to the immigrant population might feel threatened if other individuals hold a view that the government is not responsible for the health of the immigrant population. In order to remove this communication gap and to indulge all individuals in such policy-making decisions, individuals need to be emotionally intelligent and they even need to develop better interpersonal skills. This will allow individuals in identifying the emotional issues that people experiencing while discussing policy-related matters. Developing interpersonal skills will help an individual in understanding other individuals and communicating in a manner in which others are not hurt and are ready to discuss these issues.

Through this course, I aim at learning about different healthcare policy-related issues and the part that is played by the government within the healthcare system.  I will even learn about how policies are formulated and the importance of the formulation and implementation of these policies. I even aim at learning how different discussions regarding policies take place and what are the best practices for getting involved in these discussions. These learning outcomes will help in developing my knowledge, skills, and abilities as a nurse and will even guide my practice. These learning outcomes will help in eliminating issues that I might face as a practicing nurses. These issues may include confusion about why the government has made certain policies and learning about these policies will be critical in helping others understand the policies that the government makes for the healthcare system.
