Smoking cessation is an evolving process that is characterized by series of efforts that are made in order to quit before the achievement of long-term abstinence. (Akmoldoeva, B., & Sommer, J. L. 2002) Inasmuch as a big number of individuals make efforts to quit smoking, it only a third of those making such efforts that successfully manage to quit. Approximately 75% to 80% of those who make efforts to quit smoking usually relapse before they achieve 6 months as they attempt to abstain. (Jena, S. P., 2008) The remaining population among them usually relapses after some years. The process of smoking cessation usually depends on two main approaches, which are; attempt to quit and maintaining abstinence after then. This study shall help understand the inhibiting factors that are associated with smoking cessation. In totality, the study will reveal deeper concepts that relate to primary healthcare givers and specifically, insight to family nurse practitioners. This will allow for a reexamination of how actions and practices of the nurses propagate, precipitate, promote as well as prevent general health risk behaviors and in particular smoking as a health risk factor.

Research Hypothesis

The fear of loss of enjoyment that comes with smoking is one of the reasons that inhibit smoking cessation

Null Hypothesis

The increasing need to have the enjoyment of smoking makes it hard for those smoking to quit smoking.

Variables

The following shall be the variables that shall be used to aid in the research.

Independent Variable

This is the variable that the researcher has control over. The researcher may choose to manipulate the variable so that its effects may be seen on the dependent variable. (Bergman, M. M., 2008) In this study, the independent variable includes:

1. Enjoyment of Smoking
2. Craving for cigarettes
3. The anticipated loss of smoking as a means of dealing with stress or bad moods
4. Fear of weight gaining as a result of quitting
5. Lack of coverage for the treatment after cessation

The Dependent Variable is the variable that is affected by the change of the independent variable. (Cohen, L., Manion, L., & Morrison, K., 2003) In this study, the dependent variable is:  smoking Cessation

Extraneous Variables

The extraneous variable is the kind of variable that are unwanted variables and which have an influence on the connection between the variables that are under experimentation. In this study, the extraneous variables will be. In this study, the extraneous variable shall be medical conditions that go along with the cessation process.
