Diabetes is one of the leading causes of deaths in the world. It is the shortage of insulin in the body or reduced ability to utilize insulin or both in the body. Insulin is a hormone that facilitates the transfer of glucose from the blood to different cells of the body.  As a result of decreased insulin in the body, glucose and fats stay in the blood for a longer period and damage the vital organs of the body.

There are different types of Diabetes; two of the most common are as follows:

• Diabetes 1 is more common in children and young adults and is an autoimmune disease that occurs due to various causes like genetic, environmental etc. The morbidity rate for Diabetes 1 is 5% of all the diabetic cases. Other than using insulin for its treatment, there is no way to prevent it.
• Diabetes 2 is the most prevalent type of diabetes that accounts for 90-95% of diabetic patients. It is associated with age, less physical activity, obesity, family history of diabetes etc. Morbidity of the disease varies among different races and ethnicities. American Indian, African, Latino and Asian are two folds prone to have diabetes in comparison to white adults.

High numbers of individuals around the world are suffering from Diabetes. Only in the US, 8.3% of the population that is 25.8 million people has been to have diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes (Cdc.gov, 2014). According to a survey in 2010, about two million cases of diabetes have been reported for individuals age lesser than 20 years. It is expected to increase more and according to WHO estimation, every one of three individuals in the US will have diabetes by 2030 (Who.int, 2014).

Co-morbidity with Diabetes 

Co-morbidity is the problem that does not exist as a primary problem but occurs as a result of some other disease. Diabetes is highly co-morbid that may be the cause of other problems that stands on as separate diseases like hypertension, hyperlipidemia, kidney problems that leads to kidney transplant, fatty liver, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

Individuals, it is one of the major causes of blindness, kidney problems and amputations of the limbs.
