"Skin in the Freckles 101 by Sarah Siddons" is a perfect example of a paper on dermatology. The article in question, “Freckles 101” by Sarah Siddons, relates to the reader a host of topics surrounding freckles on the human body.  Accordingly, the article begins by clearly stating precisely what freckles are; unevenly pigmented portions of the skin.  As melanin is the chemical primarily associated with skin pigmentation, the prevalence of freckles, as the article states, can be directly attributed to the uneven way in which certain individual’s skin is ultimately unevenly pigmented.

The article goes on to relate to the reader that there are in fact two different types of freckles: primary freckles and secondary freckles.  The primary freckles are those which have been evidenced since early childhood whereas the secondary freckles are the ones that have come to exist due to sun damage to the skin (Siddons 1).  With respect to the beauty component of the article, the author states that there are a number of techniques that can be employed to diminish, reduce or remove freckles from the human body.  However, before delving too deeply into the beauty aspect of freckles, the author notes that although redheads are known for their freckles, the fact is that anyone of any race or nationality can have these minor skin blemishes.

The first of these has to do with the least invasive; applying makeup.  Secondly, the author discusses the various crèmes that can be applied to the skin in order to effectively bleach the freckle or the surrounding skin in order to make a more uniform representation.  Lastly, surgical procedures are discussed; i.e. various forms of peels and laser resurfacing.  Due to the fact that none of these, with the exception of the makeup, of course, is harmless to the body, the author strongly recommends that the individual who is troubled by their freckles should seek to find a way in which they can accept their freckles as a form of personality identification and look differentiation. Although many view such an occurrence as a blemish, the fact of the matter is that the condition is rare enough for some that it is actually somewhat a desirable attribute that helps to set the individual apart in a positive way.

Moreover, the article goes on to engage the reader with some of the key differences between primary and secondary freckles as a way to warn the reader of the tell-tale warning signs of skin cancer.  By knowing and understanding the means by which certain freckles can change and actually morph into a cancerous growth, the reader is able to be aware of some of the warning signs they should look for on their own bodies.
