The key responsibility of psychologists serving in governmental hospitals is to evaluate the condition of a patient suffering from a mental disorder (Cohen, Anthony, & Farkas, 1997).  This process is designed to categorize the individual and decide whether or not he would be able to make a full recovery. In the light of the law, in developed countries, people with permanent mental diseases are considered to disable for their lifetime, so due to this reason, they are supposed to live their entire life on government’s assistance. However, the severe nature of the disease compels psychologists towards abandoning their attempts to heal these people. As the consequences of categorization are overwhelming, the decision should be taken with great care, so that doors of rehabilitation should not be closed on anyone, except extreme cases. In this way, psychologists’ decisions are observed. On the other hand, patients’ willingness to recover from a cognitive disease is, of paramount importance in psychiatric sciences (Gervey, 2010). The treatment to assess the patient’s willingness to recover from a mental disorder could be divided into the following stages: 

• Need for Change 
• Commitment to Change 
• Self Awareness 
• Environmental Awareness 
• Personal Closeness 

Need for Change 

This phase of the treatment is primarily concerned with compelling the patient to realize his condition. This stage erects the foundation, upon which whole treatment could be based, at a later stage.  

Commitment to Change 

This stage is all about evaluating the patient’s commitment towards going through with the treatment. During this stage, the therapist demonstrates some trust upon his patient and allows him to experience a normal environment, such as taking him to the park, where a psychologist will evaluate his behavior towards various stimuli.  

Self Awareness  

At this stage, a psychologist facilitates a patient in accepting the reality that he is ill and needs treatment. This phase is different from the maiden one, because, during this one, the patient is supposed to confess his condition. In the first stage, therapists use some force of logic in an attempt to convince the individual about his condition. This stage is important because if it is implemented properly, it will result in a highly committed patient towards recovery (Cohen et. al, 1997). 

 Environmental Awareness 

In the course of this phase, the patient is forced to see the behavior and expectation of his closed ones, because generally, people suffering from mental illness consider their family members as their enemies, thus this stage is designed to soften the behavior of a patient towards his family and friends. As a result, these people could assist him in recovering from his illness. 

Conclusion 

This paper concludes that the role of the psychologist is a significant one in categorizing the patient in light of his current mental condition. This research also takes into account, the role of the therapist in helping a mentally sick person in healing. The process is hereby divided into various steps such as the need to change, commitment to change, and so on.
