Analysis of a Stakeholder: GlaxoSmithKline GlaxoSmithKline is the world leading pharmaceutical company which has taken stand for reforms in the health care coverage for individuals. This paper discusses the position of its stakeholders in the reformation of health care and why have they taken such position for its reform. Select of Stakeholder: Stakeholders for GlaxoSmithKline have been selected that have suggested reforms in health care that would improve financing and quality of health care to achieve better quality patient outcomes and would control overall health cost. Stakeholder’s position on healthcare reform: The Stakeholders of GlaxoSmithKline addressed three potential areas that could improve the health care system of U.S by taking its position for health care reform. GSK has taken position to improve health care in following areas: 1. Health insurance coverage 2. Health care delivery services 3. Improvement of health care system Health Insurance Coverage: GSK takes a stand that every person should be able to acquire high quality health care insurance coverage. The company identifies that it can be attained by reforming the private sector policies and making individual responsible to obtain health care coverage. The employers would also be responsible for providing the health coverage or to make enhancement in the current health insurance. Stakeholder’s of GSK has proposed some reforms that would help in achieving goals that are outlined by the company (GlaxoSmithKline, 2009). A certain amount of subsidies should be given to individuals who would not have the desired amount of salaries or is below to a certain level. This is to ensure that every individual would be able to obtain insurance coverage without any difficulty and it should be made available for everyone. GSK would help individual mandate if insurance will be made affordable for every person. Improvements should be made in children health care program that would include safety net programs and medical aid for people. Medical aid should be made easier for individuals for the low income level group to Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The government must expand funds regarding medical aid because many States and cities are financially stressed that could not afford medical aid. GSK makes a proposal to the federal government to eliminate taxes which are induced on the employer based health care insurance. If a person is purchasing and individual coverage then it must have to pay the amount after deducting from tax while if it is employer based health coverage then there should be unlimited tax exclusion on the health care coverage. There should be an equitable tax treatment which would be fair to all parties and there should also be a limit for the exclusion of taxes from the amount of employees. Health Care Delivery Services: GSK believes that people should be able to afford health insurance and would also be able to attain high quality coverage to improve their value of life and to improve the outcome of patients. People with chronic diseases should be taken care and policies should be made to promote wellness for people and not just a specific class. Greater investment should be made on controlling chronic diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure and heart diseases. Vaccination rates should be improved for all citizens of the country from children to adult which is important for primary prevention (GlaxoSmithKline, 2009) Delivery of health care would be improved with better coordination. Patient-centered medical homes should be constructed that would help in prevention of the chronic diseases and the availability of the desired medicine in one place. Payment reforms should be made in which payment of the money would be according to provide better health care and quality instead of services provided in terms of its volume. This would promote value based benefit for the people as it would not have discrimination due to geographic variation in the quality of services. This would ensure the maintenance of quality as equal in all health care institutions (GlaxoSmithkline, 2012). Electronic Health Records (EHR) and similar new technologies should be introduced in healthcare centers that could help in improving the health quality and would speed up the process of health care and making clinical decisions. These tools would also reduce variations in care which are commonly witnessed in institutions (GlaxoSmithKline, 2009). Financing Coverage Improvements: Concessions should be provided to provide cost free health care coverage to people who are not able to afford coverage and these concessions should be made equitable. The biopharmaceutical industry has agreed to provide $80 billion for the health care system to provide people high quality medical attention with concessions. The two most significant drivers in health care are medical aid and Medicare which requires high cost. The federal government must make reforms to reduce the cost and financial stability should be made in these programs. Employees should be free from federal taxes in their investment in health care programs. Insurance coverage should be expanded in comprehensive health reforms (GlaxoSmithkline, 2012). Why Stakeholder’s have taken these positions: Many people in the United States are uninsured and do not have a good health care access which is adequate for every person. The reason for particular situation is the rising cost of health care quality and insurance which is not affordable for every individual which has restrained them to purchase the coverage (GlaxoSmithKline, 2009). The Federal government does not provide better health care services to people who are immersed in poverty due to which reforms should be necessary for the improvement in the quality of health care. There are many chronic diseases prevailing in the country but not many reforms and preventive controls have been taken that could reduce diseases in the country. Government medical institutions do not have standard services in their health institutes and are mostly based on the volume of services provided by these institutions instead of providing value based services (Forman, 2010). People of the country are unaware of the equitable rights for their medical health insurance which has been unfairly divided among different class of individuals.
