An issue that is a great concern to millions of Americans is whether the government should provide healthcare. This issue is at the heart of the debate over liberty and the pursuit of happiness; without good health, it is impossible to be happy or free. It is clear from the logic of the arguments used by proponents of public healthcare and from basic common sense that the government must provide this service to people.

            No one can deny that healthcare is expensive; the system in the U.S. is one of the most expensive in the whole world (VOA). It uses up a lot of resources. Nevertheless, it provides great value for money. A strong country needs to ensure that all of our citizens are healthy and fit. The alternative—leaving everyone to fend for themselves—is not a good idea as it will eventually cost more money. America will be forced to pay for emergency care for those unable to care for themselves.

            The truth is that Americans needs to be their brothers and sisters’, keeper. They need to take care of one another and do our best to help those who are less fortunate than we are. In Canada, there is public healthcare that is quite effective. It provides good outcomes at a reasonable price. America needs to emulate this model.

            Some people feel that healthcare is too expensive and that the government should leave it all in the hands of the private sector and insurance companies. This is the background to the big debate in recent years between Republicans and Democrats about this issue (Moore). Both sides feel strongly, but only one can be right. Republicans think that everyone should rely on themselves.

Nevertheless, there are many Americans who believe that they live in communities and they need to help people achieve their best possible health outcomes. They cannot wait any longer—they need to act to help people achieve their best possible lives. Every moment they waste debating political positions is another moment that a good, poor person dies because of lack of money to afford treatment at an expensive hospital. They can’t allow that situation to continue.

The truth is that in order to make public healthcare affordable Americans need to find ways to make it cheaper and make better use of our resources. The easiest way to do this is to cut waste. They also need to digitalize peoples’ medical records. These methods will allow them to save a significant amount of money. They need to look at this issue from both a moral and an economic point of view.           

Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Americans need to find a way to persuade our government to provide it to everyone. It should be something they are not forced to pay for out of pocket. They need a genuine, compassionate government that will help them provide the best healthcare for themselves and their children. They should not be afraid to act and to push our argument forward: this is the only way that things ever really change.
