An Autograft Surgery ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Antiseptic. (2012). In The Columbia Encyclopedia (6th ed.). The Columbia University Press. Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com This encyclopedia article talks about sterilization and its need. The treatment of grafts and organs is of great importance before utilizing them for surgical purposes. In my thesis, this information revealed the need of sterilization to protect the patient against diseases carrying microorganisms. In ACL surgeries, particularly in allografts, the risks of disease transmission is optimum, hence the need for aseptic techniques. However, this mandatory treatment of the tissues makes allografts prone to post- operative failure. Calne, R. Y. (2010). Organ Transplantation Has Come of Age. Science Progress, 93(2), 141+. Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com The article talks about organ transplantation surgery and how the patient’s body reacts to it. It looks in depth into the body’s reaction to foreign bodies and how it reacts to them sometimes rejecting the foreign bodies altogether. Since skin grafts are also treated as external bodies, it appropriately also gives an insight into how the patient’s body may treat an allograft and an autograft and why the treatment is different. In ACL surgeries allografts are considered as foreign tissues while autograft are not hence the former needs a greater length of time to be incorporated when compared to the latter which makes autografts the better choice owing to early and safe incorporation thus this served as a strong support point for my thesis statement. Ganguli, T Linemen Face Second Half of Season without Their Leader. The Florida Times Union. Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com. (2010, November 13). Jaguars Defense Loses Kampman to ACL Tear; Defensive This article discusses the problems that a sportsperson faces after an ACL injury and surgery. It mostly looks into the trauma faced by sports people who have been victim to some sort of field injury. The article correctly identifies the reasons behind the need of quick recovery for such people. The content helped me conclude that the surgery opted for must be such that the recovery time is minimal but it should also help the person return to the game. The goal of my thesis was to prove why autografts are a better option. Most ACL problems are linked to physically active people, so it becomes really necessary that the tissue chosen for surgery (autograft/allograft) has to help the patient return back to their normal lives as soon as possible since most sportspeople depend on the sports for their livelihood. STAY Healthy Ashley James, Welsh Rugby Union Physio. (2012, November 26). Daily Post Post (Liverpool, England), p. 16. Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com The source talks about ACL injuries, the causes behind the ACL tears and the need to treat ACL injuries as soon as possible to restore confidence in the patient. From this source I learnt how ACL tearing occurs and how it affects the patient. For my thesis understanding the reason behind an ACL injury and the aftereffect was beneficial and crucial because then it becomes easier to understand the expectations from an ACL reconstruction and select the appropriate graft tissue. Transplantation, medical. (2012). In The Columbia Encyclopedia (6th ed.). The Columbia University Press. Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com This article talks about the kinds of tissue grafts, organ grafts and immunity of the body in detail. It states the difference between cadaveric grafts and own tissue grafts and the various pros and cons involved. The article also discusses the effect of graft surgeries on the human body from an immunological perspective. From this article I learnt about the different types of grafts and their origin. I also learnt how each type is treated before usage. The treatment of the individual grafts being different gave me enough reasons to decide between the graft options. Walking ... with a Dead Man's Knee; Ground-Breaking New Surgery That Uses Donor Tissue to Repair Torn Ligaments. (2011, January 16). The Mail on Sunday (London, England), p. 25. Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com The article talks about the advantages and disadvantages of allografts. The article contains valued arguments given by a real life patient on his choice of an autograft over an allograft. The contents of the article helped to understand the uses of allografts from the patient’s as well as the surgeon’s point of view. The choice between an allograft and an autograft depends on the mutual agreement between the surgeon and the patient. The patient needs to be well informed about the pros and cons of both the options before making a decision. In my thesis, I supported the use of autografts; hence this article gave in-depth information from a real life patient’s point of view as to why he selected autografts over an allograft. Whittle, R. C., & Crow, B. (2009). Prevention of ACL Injuries in Female Athletes through Early Intervention. The Sport Journal, 12(3). Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com This article mostly discusses the effect of ACL injuries on athletes especially women athletes. It gives statistical information as to how these injuries are caused and why ACL occurs mostly in women. The article also talks about the costing involved in ACL surgeries. ACL reconstruction is a crucial surgery for athletes since it occurs in the knees without which any active person is paralyses. The effect an ACL tear has on an athlete is massive. In my thesis, this article helped me evaluate the appropriate tissue graft from an economical point of view. I could conclude that since an ACL tear is common among athletes, the reconstruction using the graft should be such that the athlete can afford the surgery more than once if required. This made it easier for me to understand the selection of tissue graft over the other. Zhang, A. Y., Bates, S. J., Morrow, E., Pham, H., Pham, B., & Chang, J. (2009). Tissue- Engineered Intrasynovial Tendons: Optimization of Acellularization and Seeding.Journal of Rehabilitation Research & Development, 26(4), 489+. Retrieved from http://www.questiaschool.com This journal article discusses on tendon surgeries and using allografts for tendon reconstruction. It discusses the advantages as well as disadvantages that come with an allograft surgery. The article is mostly centered on use of modern bio-engineered tendon for surgery and highlights the necessity of avoiding allografts. The article provided me with valuable content to support my thesis point. It discouraged allograft on the basis of ethical concern and possibility of disease transmission. It also talked about the possible requirement of immunosuppressant drugs. Read More
