THE INNOVATION WORKOUT: HOW FACEBOOK HAS IMPAIRED COMMNUNICATION Name: Tutor: Course: Institution: Date: METHODOLOGY Innovation Step 1 The Main Perceived Problem Social media has changed the way we are able to present ourselves and therefore how we communicate in reality. This may be advantageous because it has improved speed, convenience, reliability and increased ways to reach a wider population. Likewise, the ability to interact, keep in touch with distant family by a click of a button and find out about disastrous occurrences also advances the level of convenience in social media (Cuel and Ferrario 2009). Unfortunately however, it doesn't represent true self because it is almost impossible to read the character or personality of online presences. This means that relationships are harder to ‘read’ online and gauge sincerity as the changes in the way we communicate, express and internalize information is better understood on a face to face basis. Other negative issues that result due to this fake presence on the internet are the posting of inappropriate information on the internet, the interference with people’s privacy, and miscommunication of information due to a wide array of information outlets leading to interference. Another issue is the value in self-worth has been downgraded such that the younger population seek attention from the wrong places and in in this case sites, basing their values on “likes” or “followers” (McBrayer 2014). Another effect of social media use today is the reliance on internet based or technology oriented means of communication or expression. To clarify this problem, there are certain major areas where social media has taken over such as the use of centrelink among the youth and young adults, to help in coping with various financial issues. In addition, the social media has affected communication in both a positive and negative way in the transport sector. This is reference to the payment and acquistion of tickets for flights, bus travels or railway use such as the Myki site. This is not an accessible means to every person and may at times lead to cases of use of excessive force by ticket inspectrors whwn the demand is not met. In terms of application for jobs, certain occupations such as the applications by PSO officers also has a site specifically created to facilitate this case. This means that not all people interested in employment with the Victoria police as Protective Service Officers are able to get this opportunity. Lastly, there are the controversial automated parking fines which have raised issues of unconstitutionalism with many individuals appealing against them.It is evident therefore that the internet has reshaped how people interact and relate in general (Drussell 2012). This is because relying on social media as shown above shows that there is a huge reliance on technology as a form of communication and expression instead of using the actual representation of self. Key question: Why then is the use of social media for self-representation and image presentation a great hindrance to communication today and to what extent? Innovation Step 2 Asking the Customer Table 1: Showing a Persona Report on Social Media Innovation Step 3 Table 2: Showing the Social Media Market Today The Markets of Today Predictions of Future Trends Use of Social Media Youths -Highly used mainly by students, high school and university, 95% of whom are teens -75% of all teens text and 63% say they text to communicate. Adults: -Facebook is currently the most commonly used online social network among adults. Among adult profile owners 73% have a profile on Facebook, -48% have a profile on MySpace and 14% have a LinkedIn profile. -Everyone will have access to wireless internet and smartphones. Allowing access to social media instantly, rather than having to wait for connection. Reasons for using social Media -Used to promote a lifestyle -Used by suppliers to advertise to particular age groups and interest levels. -Teens take steps to shape their reputation, manage their networks and mask information they don’t want other to know. -People will become heavily dependent on social media to keep informed of their movements and that of their friends. -Google eyewear will provide access for people to receive real time information to where you are and what you are seeing. -More jobs will become online, providing complication to employment levels and the overall social aspect of employment. Present Competition Due to technology fails, the need for consumer privacy and the ban of the use of social media in work places to prevent creation of informal settings Facebook Competitors Twitter – Allows information rather than photos to be shared with a restriction on the amount of text shared. Information and advertising is shared by people, not the advertiser. Instagram – Only allows for photos to be shared, restricting the use of text and direct advertising. More of a visual connection, rather than plain text. Snapchat – No access by advertisers. Only direct contact to those added to list of contacts. Unable to keep image or text unless screenshot and the sender receive notifications. INNOVATION STEP 5 Best Idea Generation Technique The chosen technique in this process will adopt an idea developed by someone else. This means that there will be an analysis on an occurrence that took place in relation to another individual, to give the way forward on what to do for this paper. Firstly, choosing the right person to participate is very important and in this case it will be our neighbors who live in the student residence. The analysis will incorporate analyses based on their different nationalities, ages, habits, hobbies, and marital status. Looking at the daily life of Hazza for instance, will be critical in identifying most of the issues in relation to this matter. Hazza, who is a young man from Abu Dhabi and is 34-years old is married and has 5 children. He is in Melbourne without his family to learn English. He studies at Swinburne University. He is addicted to social media so he looks every 5minutes on his mobile phone to check the updates on social media. He uses Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. He is a funny and traditional guy who loves to meet his friends but while his friends are talking with each other he is always on his phone with earphones in his ears. Other times, Hazza watches videos on Snapchat, Instagram, and so on. Furthermore, he uses social media to contact his family and his friends in Abu Dhabi. His children and friends send him funny videos via Snapchat. He misses his country, his family, and his friends in Abu Dhabi. This entire project will take place in in Melbourne, Hawthorn, Burwood Road, and UniLodge Vivida on the 18th April 2016 at 3pm and will be conducted by individuals from this project. The project intends to try and find ways to alter the problem that social media has created such as the change of the way we are able to present ourselves and how we communicate in reality. Based on Hazza’s case scenario for instance, his oldest child who is 16 years old may also be addicted to social media as well. We are therefore thinking that helping Hazza change his habits will be the first step towards creating a role model for his child. This means that he would take more time to do more private activities with his son, such as playing soccer or making trips. A also talk about that problem and would tell his son the effects and disadvantages of social media. Even if he still cannot get good results he would penalize him by taking away his phone and laptop. Innovation Step 6 The Workshop planning Template The Purpose of this workshop is to generate an idea of the issues affecting effective communication that will be held on the 2nd of May, 2016 at 2pm. To facilitate the event and participation, there will be the need for a materials checklist such as the flip chart, computer, blackboard, Notes, Internet access and Tutor. On the other hand, there is the Agenda checklist will comprise of looking at the timing, such as Monday classes and favorable group meetings. The other agenda will be the brainstorming session which will be the main warm up in this case and the creation of creative thinking rules and techniques that revolve around brainstorming of ideation techniques. The success of the project will be evident based on the ability to make money, gain a reputation, attract customers and create a long lasting brand image. This will mean the availability of quality screens, Flip chart pens Colored pens Connectors/adapters WiFi, Directions, Name badges, breaks planned Space for discussion and Filtering ideas among others. In addition to this, there is need for lots of ideas, or three great ideas to progress, or buy in from the finance team and the encouragement of low risk in terms of financial risk, potential availability, and large market and post-workshop discussing ideas (Sorensen 2010). This is because they will be necessary in the creation of an application and generation of a suitable prototype in the same case applications. Other relevant issues include the idea that the project is considering which is the developing of an app that encourages people to connect with people face to face rather than through social media. The main resources to make this happen include People, technology, graphics team, investors, personal capital and time. Likewise, there is need for promotion of good communication to ensure that there is a better awareness of the application and all other features that relate to it. The end game therefore will analyze to understand whether there is good profit being made and whether the advertising is bearing fruits. In addition, there is need of numerous downloads, international recognition and effective use of the application in question. Looking at the current capacity at the moment, it is safe to say that the project has staff with good research skills, there are good time schedules for development and the access to the minimal funds required as it is an online product. Generally, to achieve this project in due time, there are certain issues that can be regulated such as ceasing to work Part time to create more time and the use of study time sufficiently. Innovation Step 7 Developing Of a Filter for the Idea As earlier pointed out, the main aim of this project is to a mobile app prototype that counteracts or encourages people to reconnect with people in real life as opposed to contacting them online all the time. To ensure that the bad applications are filtered out from the desired outcome, there are three simple criteria that the innovation will follow. The First Filter The First filter criteria is whereby the following issues will be considered. The application should be able to meet the needs of the problem such as analyzing of the bad communication styles. In addition to this, the necessary resources to make a viable application should be met and lastly, there should be affordability and tangibility to the extent of the project. The Second Filter Under the second filter, the project will analyze the capability of getting people to use the application. This means that there should be consumers interested in the product once it is completed. In addition to this, to further get people interested in the application, there should be an evaluation on the incentives most likely to draw people to the use of this application. Having a manageable and profitable application is also critical because it shows that there is a probability that kit will be of benefit to the consumer targeted and those behind its creation. Outcome of the first and second criteria Alerts people in the area with someone who they are friends with. This means that the application will be fully functional and will be able to alert friend closest to you of their presence as well as suggesting activities that the individuals can do together at a nearby place identified by the application at that time. For example, “Have you spoken to ____ lately? How about organizing a coffee?” Approaches a team of graphic designers. This refers to using technology to our advantage especially because the costs are low as it is an online presence. Similarly, there will be reasonably cheap cost of initial startup, advertising/patent among others. Put advertisements on Facebook As Facebook is the biggest contributor to our problem or the focus on our problem, addressing our community from the platform that has generated the problem will be much better understood. Likewise, as there are many users, it is possible to reach many people Management of relationships The application will thrive on showing that the main aim is the management of the relationship of subscribers such that they are able to keep in touch with each other and make time for vital issues. This helps consumers understand that the application will fix the deteriorating interpersonal relations and communication Manage/offset costs through businesses Using our site to advertise their cafe, the app uses your location setting to see cafes in the area and may suggest that you go to one of these businesses that have paid for your advertising. 'Have you spoken to ____ lately? How about organizing a coffee with them at the CrabApple Cafe, only 200 meters from you now? Check in for a 10% discount off your next meal there” Concept card idea This refers to the creation of an application that is in conjunction with cafes/business to generate funding. This means that the application helps in advertising issues relating to a particular coffee area or any other nearby place at a fee. This will be important in the funding of the initial startup cost, the risk and the needs. Under risk, there may be a substantial amount of ‘manufacturing’ and there will be a possible risk is people not downloading mainly due to possible behavioral change. This will be an incentive for them to use the app because they can receive a discount at the businesses which have specifically used the application in question to advertise. In terms of needs, there is the graphics team, understanding of application patenting, advertising team/money to do this on Facebook, wouldn't need to 'advertise' anywhere else as our target demographic is the Facebook community. Lastly, the concept card will be important in the making of a prototype application in the final stage Innovation Step 8 Prototype The final stage will involve the creation of a prototype that is preferred to coming up with a suitable solution. The mobile application prototype in this case will be the ´Facebook or Face’ Real Time connecting and it has a number of aims and objectives. The method most viable for getting the product out to the public is by targeting consumers using Facebook as it is the largest used application. In addition to this, the download will be free but will require 1dollar more to access restaurant savings. The product will be intended to generate good revenue as a business in this case. The main feature of this application is advertisement because it will use the locations of people and restaurants and offer discounts to attract business to the restaurants at a fee. Once a user of the application checks in a registered location, the coffee and meal deals are set to treat them in a special way. This will generally create a great way to reconnect with both families and friends after a long time. Overall, the main aims of the project will be met as well as the problem brought about by the excessive use of social media corrected. This is because this application will encourage face to face interactions with family and friends. In addition to this, it will strengthen interpersonal relations away from social media platforms and lastly, in conjunction with face book help understand the people who you interact with when it is made possible for individuals to meet.
