The staff and students of Deakin University will walk to work on that day and will be joined by other members of the community. This program is intended to promote healthy living for the community. Deakin University has received funding from the Government for this program. Among those in attendance will be Steve Smith, the Australian Cricket Captain and Kenric Org-Agg, the minister for healthy living. Kenric Org-Agg will make the announcement at the conclusions of the Festival. Dr John Langs, Australia’s leading corporate health expert notes that walking is an easy and effective way of increasing productivity. According to pedestrian council, people who walk before and during work are generally healthier, more productive and creative and less likely to be absent or on sick leave. The Pedestrian Council also advises people on healthy living tips such as taking half an hour walk at lunch break, leaving the car at least a kilometer from destination and walking the rest of the way, getting off a public transport few stops earlier and walking the rest of the way. The slogan for this program is Healthy Eating, Active Living-Start with Walking. The program aims at enhancing the health of the society by encouraging them to walk. CHL is expected to benefit every member of the community. Statistics shows that half of the world’s adult population and 22.78% of children population is obese, this fact program will therefore have great contribution in ensuring every member of the society remains healthy. WHY: Healthy Living, Active living is an event aimed at sensitizing members of the society on the importance of doing regular body exercises. With the success of this program it is expected that the number of the obesity cases in Australia will decline. WHEN: Healthy Eating, Active Living will be on June 8, 2015 starting at 9.00am at the University Grounds. The event will start at 9.00am with DU Athletics running 15KM circuit of Geelong. To help the participants on this day the following arrangements have made; the buses will be leaving the city from six points every 30 minutes starting 7.00am, stands will be set along the way to offer water and rest stops. All roads leading to Deakin University will be closed between 7.00am and 11.00am and no motor vehicles will be allowed to use. WHERE: Deakin University Grounds. This program is new and it will be held annually during the month of June. The idea of coming up with this program came in to limelight with the realisation of the fact there are so many cases of obesity in the Australian community. The statistics show that almost half of the adult population and a fifth of the child population are obese. This program has attracted many sponsors. The main sponsor of this program is the government through the ministry of Healthy Living. The ministry has allocated funds for this program so that it can become a success. Centre for Living has enabled health professionals to work together to improve food environment by looking at what has already and finding out what needs to be done in future. Government has been strictly keen on promoting healthy lifestyles by funding major life health programs such as Centre for Healthy Living. these projects aims at finding ways through which government, food manufacturers and retailers can work together to make a healthy food environment and making healthy choice an easy choice for everyone. Healthy Eating, Active Living is a program under Centre for Living which advocates, at least for a start, that participants in this program starts by walking. This program will be launched at the Deakins University by the minister of Healthy Living Konrec Org-Agg. After the launch it will be expected that everyone starts adopting healthy living tips such as those given by the Pedestrian Council. The aim of this is to reduce the number of cases of Obesity and other chronic diseases caused by lack of practice. It will also aim at zero pollution, healthy and community friendly environment. The day of the launch will be marked by various activities such as the 15KM run by the DU Athletics team around Geelong. The participants will have to walk for a certain distance will be issued with maps of the walking routes to follow and free T-Shirts. DU wellbeing and welfare staff will stationed on along all routes to assist on any medical issues or motivational support. At the end, the minister for Healthy Living will make his address where he is expected to make some important announcements. This is one of the major programs initiated by the Deakins University which aims at encouraging healthy living, not only by its students and staff, but also by members of the community in Geelong City and beyond. With this program attracting more and more sponsors and hence funding, it is expected that in the next series it will attract a large numbers of participants from all over Australia. This will make Centre for Healthy Living reach more people on its sensitisation program and hence every member of the society will benefit.
