COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA DEVELOPMENT by Student’s name Code+ course name Professor’s name University name City, State Date The advancement in the development of technologies has enhanced communication. Today, technologies such as the internet, mobile devices, and web-based applications have made communication cheap and easy. The internet traffic is expected to grow and will be motivated majorly by the continued use of Internet Protocol (IP) video, virtualization, and data centers. It is foreseen that internet use in the next 10 years will be four times the use today. The major motivator of traffic of the internet will be web-based video, which will comprise file download and streaming of video from data centers (Ryan, 2010). There is also expected to be the growth of internet-enabled digital televisions which will make it possible to integrate television contents produced professionally to the internet. The control and interaction of the content will majorly be controlled by consumers, and not producers. Many internet users will migrate from the current transmission protocols to Internet Protocol (IP) Ethernet protocol and broadband networks with high speeds. The compatibility of mobile operating systems and networks with fixed network access systems and radio systems will improve in the next 10 years. In addition, the mobile operating systems and networks with fixed network access systems will be capable of supporting application software for mobile devices and transmission of packets (Das, 2010). As substitutes to branded systems, open source system software will arise. The connection to the internet and mobile phones’ third party application software have and will continue to be made available without the planned involvement of network operators of networks and sellers of equipment. In addition, users will gain from mobile phones with more functionalities and easier use. Handsets with near field communication abilities have emerged in many nations. The technology has and will continue to encourage mobile payments and mobile commerce in the next ten years. The web has evolved from the first generation, which was identified as the Information Age, to second generation, identified as Web 2.0. Web 2.0 has largely encouraged interaction. The development of Web 3.0 is currently underway, and will provide personalized experienced with the web in the near future (Fernando et al., 2012). The full potential of semantic web is also expected to be realized in the next 10 years. Social networks are expected to include services that would enable users be aware of various locations. Though not fully utilized currently, getting money from selling information about users through the use of application software that targets the behavior of people will be in the rise in the next 10 years. The software will also relay information that would be attractive to users to them. Though there would be high risk of privacy, the revenue will benefit users if it is directed towards upgrading and maintaining infrastructure. With the improvement in human computer interaction, computers are expected to be more usable and reactive to the needs of users (Law et al., 2014). The improvement of telepresence and tele-immersive systems are projected to provide improved versions of virtual reality infrastructures. However, it is projected that there will be many threats to e-security including botnets, cyber warfare, malware, phishing and spam of voice over the internet protocol, and fraud and theft over the internet. The improvement of media and technology will provide users with more control, opportunities, choice, and social interaction with regard to what to use in the internet and the kinds of people to socialize with in the internet. The number of people blogging and using social networking sites is expected to increase a lot in the next 10 years. The number of businesses utilizing blogs and social networking sites is also expected to increase. People are expected to utilize websites to search for jobs, link with online clients, and network their businesses. The collaboration of employees will be enhanced by the use of social networking sites and blogs. To incorporate the changing needs of users in their websites, social networking companies are expected to add much functionality in their websites within the next 10 years. In addition, social media has and will continue to allow users to produce and distribute content at cheaper costs than the television, print, and radio. While cloud computing has been in used for some time, its use by businesses is expected to increase within the next 10 years. This will enhance scalability as computing services will be available whenever they are needed at the time they are needed[Buy10]. With the effort to reduce costs and encourage green computing, cloud computing will change the way businesses operate and the way people work. Since cloud computing enables users to access and use data from a centralized location whenever they are through the internet, it is expected that workers will not to be required to travel to work in offices, but might work at the comfort of their homes. Currently, mobile and fixed broadband networks of high speeds are utilized to distribute media and communicate video across many podiums. However, for high rates of data transmission and distribution for mobile broadband networks, more spectra will be required to operate the advanced technologies. Since spectra is a scarce resource, the need to use the available spectra efficiently and flexibly will be a major concern in the next 10 years as the need for higher data rates increases. Since the techniques of compression enhance efficiency of content, compression techniques will continue to be a major concern in the next 10 years as there must be a compromise between the quality of video produced, and bandwidth requirements. International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has recently been working on the issue of compression and came up with H.264 standard which can produce similar quality video with the older MPEG-2 standard with the use of very small storage space (half the space taken by the old format) (International Telecommunication Union, 2008). Within the next 10 years, ITU will continue developing and improving the current H.265 standard, and maybe come up with a more advanced standard, which is expected to utilize much smaller storage space and produce a high quality video. Since the introduction of computers, a lot of improvement has been made with regard to storage space and processing power. With the advancement of processor power, high performance applications are expected to be developed to run on the computers in the next 10 years. The processing speed, utilizing the tera-scale, will be developed in many computers. This is because Intel’s development of a central processing unit that can perform one trillion computations in a single second has worked. If this development takes place, the processing power of supercomputers will be improved, and this will make many businesses to utilize the high power device to perform their daily transactions. The recent drive to prevent global warming has resulted to many organizations trying to preserve the environment. Pettey (2007) approximates that ICT sector is responsible to about 2% of emission of carbon dioxide to the environment. Many organizations are now moving to green computing - a drive that would see more organizations implementing green computing in the next 10 years. Many communication technologies that are developed are designed in a way that minimize the consumption of power, and implement cooling gadgets. Power supplies that are friendly to the environment are likely to be developed and desktop computers likely to be replaced with thin clients in order to save energy (Jindal & Gupta 2012). Impacts to Individuals and Society The developments in communication media will bring both positive and negative impacts. However, since the positive impacts outweigh the negative impacts, and with proper management of the negative impacts, the society and individuals will reap the greatest benefits. The development of social networking sites will enable people to socialize easily without distance hindrance, market their products and services, and using more functionality that would make them productive. Through blogging, individuals will be able to educate and inform people across the globe about issues affecting society and ways of improving lifestyles. High speed internet connection and high power supercomputers will improve the way businesses operate. People will be able to access information they require from the internet within a short time, and manufacturing processes that require powerful computers will be effectively implemented, thus improving both economic and livelihood of people. Powerful supercomputers will also be used in hospitals and medical discovery rooms therefore will make patients in critical conditions to receive better health care. Since new technologies that would encourage the compression of video easy while utilizing small storage space will be developed, high quality videos will be produced, and more space will be available for more video production. With the implementation of green computing, the environment will be safe, and the chances of global warming reduced. This will make the environment green and sustainable. People in the society will therefore not be affected by drastic climate change that would have taken place without the implementation of green computing. However, the development of communication media will pose some threats to people and businesses. There will be malware and cybercrime targeting the developed technologies. This would lead to loss of data and money, and make people fear using the developed technologies. But with appropriate preventive measures, the threats will be contained, and users will benefit from the technologies. References List Buy10: , (Buyya, et al., 2010), Read More
