Historical Development of the Mass Media Different forms of communication exist that allows ideas to be transmitted to many people. They include different forms like newspapers, film, radio, TV and the internet. The radio was first put into use in the 1890s and replaced flags and pigeons as a form of communication (IEEE Global History Network 1). The first broadcast over the radio was on the baseball that took place on August 1921 in Pittsburgh. (IEEE Global History Network 1). The announcer used a converted telephone for a mike (IEEE Global History Network 1). The announcer was called Horold Arlin, and he was the first to broadcast football match over the radio. The radio station was called KDKA, and it was the country's first radio station. The radio sports broadcasting have developed through time since the 1950's. In the 1950 the sports, broadcasting was widely featured in the New York City. Additionally, the radio broadcasting industry was growing into a multibillion-dollar industry. In the 1960's sports talk advanced from programming and individual commentary to a round table discussion; thus making the sports events more interactive and interesting. Consequently, in the 1980s radio sports broadcasting became a major force and enterprise and were acknowledged by the radio sports programming and the rating giant (Rosen3). Moreover, the current radio broadcasting has been digitalized, covers, and enjoys a big audience because of the growing interest in sports in the majority of the population all over the world. The BBC radio was established in1922 as the only radio programme in the UK. Consequently, the trend continued and in 1967, the BBC established three networks that had regional programmes incorporated (Hub pages 1). In 1973, local stations were also licensed by IBA Independent Broadcasting Authority and could cover only certain regions, and only one station was allowed in a particular area. Despite the efforts, illegal radios also existed that could broadcast pop music to young people. Nowadays the radios have got different forms i.e. the analogue and the digital radio stations are now available. The radios broadcast different things and feature on different niches. The BBC is still the most popular radio station since they have captured and diversified their programmes to capture a wide range of audience. The current state of the media industry is promising. This is because there has been a tremendous growth in the industry over the years. The growth of the digital reporting and the development of content sharing of the local news and the development of a digital video have boosted the industry (Pew Research Journalism project 1). Additionally, the current media have provided the audience with the latest news on investments, ownership trends, and the latest economic news. When compared to last year and this year the state of the media has now become more pronounced (Pew Research Journalism project 1). The current trend of today's media is towards digitalization of every single ad, news or any information. Nowadays the world has become a global village with the use of the digital media; information can be transmitted from one region to another within seconds. Digital media have changed on the way people live nowadays. Digital technology has reduced time lag of the transmission of information from one point to another (Joag 3). Additionally, the digital media has enhanced the processing, storage and retrieval of information at a very high speed saving people time and speeding up development. Additionally, the digital media have enhanced the easy portability of information that can be carried in digital gadgets like the memory cards (Joag 3). This has made a positive impact in the current society since people nowadays can transfer information electronically from one point of the continent to another within seconds and with high confidentiality. Additionally, the digital media have made communication easier (Joag 3). Nowadays with the advent of the mobile phones and the internet, people can exchange information anytime, anywhere and with total privacy. Additionally, the social media has made communication even easier in the current society since nowadays people can chant instantly and there is the addition of the group conversation to allow people to comment rather than being spectators (Joag 4). Consequently, the digital technology has impacted our lives in a fundamental way by allowing people to exchange information simultaneously with multiple sources and parties while still undertaking their public or private responsibilities. In this scenario, people can check their mails, watch the news, listen to music, and pay bills while at the same time travelling, doing jobs, watching TV, and eating meal relaxing or eating. Moreover, such kind of multitasking has enhanced people of the current society to live in far places but still engaged to one another lives (Joag 4). There are challenges facing the media practitioners who are engaged in any level of mass communication. Firstly, is the establishment of opportunities like the public relations as the establishment of confidentiality between a given media organization and the community. This is a challenge because the information the practitioner intends to use has to be accessible, clear, and authentic. Additionally, the organizations that the practitioner intends to broadcast from must be of good reputation, openness, accessible, and authenticity that can attract commercial differentiation and banking reputation i.e. the credit reputation. On matters relating to the public relations, every medial practitioner must seek for the truth and accurate information from people and if possible seek for guidance and assistance in given information (Talking Cobblers 1). Consequently, public relations are crucial to being part of an organization since it cannot be considered an adjunct. Furthermore, the advent of the new technology has led to changes in communication. There has been a tremendous change in communication, and there is a shift from word on the page to multiple modes of sound movement, image and text on the screen. Young people now use mobile devices to consume news via different applications on their tablets and smart phones (Dalton and Bridget 2). Consequently, there has been a growing acceptance on the use of the electronic media in the classroom than the print media due to its varied interaction with the audience. Additionally, companies like Telecom use mass media to provide their services by through its reach on the large number of people. Companies like Telecom can use databases to obtain emails of their clients and even phone numbers. Such companies then send their clients messages informing their clients on the new products or service that is being offered by the company. In this scenario, the company can increase its sell of the product to the people by informing them of the product that was previously unknown by the potential clients. In conclusion, the history of the radio goes back to the 18th century. The first radio sports broadcast were made by Horold Arlin in 1921. Since then there have been innovations and the radio broadcasting industry has grown bigger and has become more commercial and digitalized. Additionally, the current state of the media industry is stable and modernized reaching a wide range of audience within a short time. Additionally, with the advent of the internet and mobile devices, communication has now become more efficient and instant through the social media platforms whereby people anywhere can communicate anytime instantly. This has positively affected our lives because we can interact with people who are far away. Moreover, the media practitioners are also faced with various challenges like confidence from the public/audience thus public relations plays a crucial role in gaining confidence with the audience.
