MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATION Name Institution Professor Course Date Question 1: Commentator’s Point of View In addressing this question, the focus was on Bill O’Reilly’s video (Fox News) regarding Obama and Race. The video did appear online on 12 July 2016. In Dallas, President Obama focused on addressing the world with the intention of calming racial discrimination in the USA. In this episode of ‘The O’Reilly Factor,’ the commentator tackles the positive and negative aspects of President Obama’s speech in tackling the race. From his point of view, the commentator tends to believe that the president is tackling the issue ineffectively. Rather than uplifting the spirits of the people, there is a need for the federal government to adopt and integrate programs aiming at tackling racial animosity in the United States. His perspective on the issue calls for the development of legal institutions and practices, which will provide fair treatment for all Americans in the midst of effective or efficient implementation. If I were to give a presentation to inform, I would adopt and integrate a similar perspective or point of view because of its effectiveness and efficiency in tackling major aspects of the speech. The commentator’s perspective analyses the speech before providing a possible solution to tackling the topic of discussion. Question 2: Method to Inform In addressing this question, I focused on the utilisation of two TV series: CSI: New York and Bones. In the first instance, it is essential to demonstrate the fact that the two TV features are similar and different in certain aspects. For instance, both TV features focus on demonstrating aspects of forensic investigation and solutions of crimes while engaging in the collection and analysis of evidence. Similarly, the entities go into detail on autopsies, as well as profiling of the perpetrators (Bell & Smith, 2010). The directors of the shows focus on constructing drama around the specific forensic laboratory, thus, the platform to enable officers and scientists to engage in solving criminal issues in the course of the episode. On the other hand, the TV features adopt diverse relationship with the victim. For instance, in Bones, there is no personal contact or involvement of the victim while CSI incorporates more characters relating to the victim and family attributes. Similarly, Bones incorporates real events while CSI focuses on fictional facts, as well as situations. From the above assessment, it is essential to demonstrate the fact that the two TV features focus on the utilisation of report mechanism of informing the target audiences on the plot. Question 3: Product Analysis In this context, the focus is on Apple’s smart-watch. The first element of discussion would be the use or description of the product. It is ideal for the target audience to have substantive information or knowledge on what the product is all about. The description element will consider incorporating diverse components, types, and features of the product. Secondly, I will consider addressing the price of the commodity to enable the consumers or target audiences to have adequate information on the affordability of the product. Thirdly, the informative speech will assess benefits of the product to enable the audiences to make valuable decisions as to procure the product. This relates to reviewing the effectiveness and efficiency of the product under discussion. Fourthly, I will consider tackling costs or cons of the product if there is any with the objective of offering an informed perspective on the product. Finally, I will consider addressing where to find the product with the intention of enabling the audiences to acquire adequate information and knowledge on the availability of the product at their disposal. These elements will be ideal for increasing the awareness of the consumers on the existing product at their disposal. Question 4: Social Issue In my lifetime, the major change I have been able to witness regarding social factor is the essence or transformation of the mode of communication. This relates to the rapid increase in the role and influence of social media in shaping the perception and decision of the society members (Bell & Smith, 2010). For instance, integration of the social media and technology has been vital in the elimination or minimization of the effective of offline communication, thus, the tendency to create and utilise virtual characters on the online platforms. From this perspective, individuals have been able to concentrate on the maximisation of the benefits of social media in improving interactions and communications among the society members. For instance, the growth of smartphone industry and internet technology has been on the forefront in facilitating increased usage of social media in diverse societal spheres. In the political sector, social media continues to act as a campaign tool or mechanism in which political practitioners interact with the target audiences. The changes in the mode of societal communication or interaction prove to have enormous gains or benefits, thus, the platform to maximise technological advancements in the modern context. Question 5: Commercial Advertisement In this context, Nike focused on using the commercial to exaggerate the implication of its product with the intention of getting its point across to the target audiences. In this picture, the company sought to incorporate a running cheetah with the writings of “What’s the secret of speed?” At the bottom of the ad, there is the statement, “Ask the master.” From this perspective, the company seeks to make its audiences into thinking that once someone buys their product; they will be able to run as fast as the cheetah, thus, the tendency to target athletes. It is valuable to demonstrate the fact that the ad does not demonstrate specificity in the targeting of the consumers in the market and industry of operation (Ladyshewsky, 2010). The whole idea of this specific advertisement proves to be extremely unbelievable, as well as absurd. It questions the logic of the influence of Nike products in enabling people to run magically fast. The advert should have been ideal through incorporating a global athlete rather than the cheetah to make it more convincing to the target audiences. The approach would be ideal in attracting numerous consumers in the market and industry of operation. Question 6: Persuasive Speaking The goal of persuasive speaking is to change or reinforce the beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviours of the receiver of the communication component. There are four critical persuasive goals. In this discussion, the focus will be on two persuasive goals: discontinuance and deterrence. Discontinuance refers to the tendency to stop doing something an individual or group is doing in the current context. On the other hand, deterrence refers to the tendency to avoid some activity or way of thinking. From this assessment, I believe that discontinuance proves to be the most challenging of the two persuasive goals. In the first instance, discontinuance might associate with cases of relapse leading to ineffectiveness and inefficiency in the achievement of the goals and targets of the act of persuasion. On the other hand, the essence of deterrence tends to depend on the ability of the communicator to highlight costs and benefits of the component with the intention of convincing the receiver to avoid subscribing to the view or perception or activity (Bell & Smith, 2010). This proves to be much easier in comparison to the discontinuance goal in attempts to persuade a target audience. The achievement of the goal of discontinuance will depend greatly on the ability and potentiality of the communicator to integrate ideal interventions. Question 7: Maslow’s hierarchy of needs In the course of developing his theory, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Maslow focused on evaluating what motivates individuals. According to his perceptions, individuals tend to possess a set of motivation systems unrelated to rewards or unconscious desires. Based on this theory, I believe that I have been able to satisfy the lower hierarchy regarding biological and psychological needs concerning food, air, shelter, warmth, sex, and sleep. Similarly, I have been to satisfy safety needs regarding protection from elements, order, law, security, freedom from fear, and stability (Adams, 2014). Thirdly, I have been able to satisfy love, and belongingness needs through have quality friends, supportive family offering affection and love, ideal friends, and workable groups. These entities play a crucial role in enabling me to satisfy the love and belongingness needs. Currently, I am pursuing satisfaction of the esteem needs regarding mastery, independence, status, dominance, self-respect, and respect from others. I will be able to achieve the satisfaction of these requirements following completion of my degree program, as well as the acquisition of quality employment opportunity. Satisfaction of such needs will be ideal in the development of the platform for the realisation of the self-actualization status in agreement with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Question 8: Ethical Persuasion It is possible for persuasion to be ethical. In the first instance, persuasion must incorporate communication act or technique, which is right in general or specific situations to be ethical. Similarly, ethical persuasion must also incorporate valid argument in the course of interacting with the target audience. From this perspective, ethical persuasion must also consider the interests of the audience through utilisation of communication act and technique appealing to the values of the society on what is good or bad. The real motives behind the communication act must also be admirable for the persuasion to be ethical. In such instances, it is ideal for the communicators to consider utilisation of truthful information aiming at making rational choice possible for the target audiences (Remland, 2016). Ethical persuasion must also reinforce free and democratic processes such as integration of clear or honest information, as well as the right to respond by the opponent. From this illustration, it is possible for the persuasion to be ethical in the modern context in which the communicator and the opponent focus on using appealing communication act and techniques to the values of the society. Question 9: Elevator Speech Elevator speech refers to a clear or brief message concerning an individual, product, or service. In this context, I focused on Coca-Cola product in the development of the elevator speech. After rehearsing the speech in my head, I have been able to grasp some thoughts on my presentation or speech. In the first instance, I believe that my speech covers the initial aspect of the elevator speech, which relates to what the product is all about to the consumers or target audiences. The description of the product incorporates its industry, commodity type, and company engaging in the production and marketing of the brand. Similarly, my elevator speech plays a critical role in the identification of Coca Cola’s target market through assessment of the intention or objective of the company in the development and presentation of the product at the disposal of the consumers. Finally, my speech plays a critical role in the course highlighting the benefits of the product. From the above discussion, it is essential to note that my presentation captures diverse elements of the product. These elements are ideal in the evaluation and exploration of the product while making it familiar to the target audiences. In this speech, the business lawyer provides the platform for offering a broad business practice. During the encounter, the lawyer came to understand the role and influence of his client’s PhD employees in stealing his ideas, thus, lack of an effective mechanism to prevent such occurrence. The lawyer demonstrates effectiveness and efficiency in working with the client to create non-compete and non-disclosure agreements towards protecting the intellectual property in the business. From this illustration, the audiences have the ability and potentiality to understand the profession of the lawyer who specialises in keeping individuals out of court. The elevator speech proves to be effective and efficient in understanding what the lawyer does best into bringing two people into compromising situations for effectiveness and proficiency in business interactions. Similarly, the speech highlights the experience of the lawyer in his eventual interaction with others in practising his profession to make a living in the contemporary context. Question 11: Non-verbal Communication Non-verbal communication refers to the process of conveying a message without the use of words relating to the dynamic process of communication. It is essential to note that nonverbal communication is fluid and fast, confusing, universal, and contextual. In other instances, it is possible for nonverbal communication to add to or replace verbal communication through intentional or unintentional perceptions. Such communication mechanisms are essential in communicating feelings and attitudes while enabling people to believe nonverbal messages in comparison to verbal communication messages. From the above illustration, it is essential to note that it limits our understanding of communication to view nonverbal communication as that which is not verbal communication. There is a need to engage in aligning verbal and nonverbal communication to interact effectively and efficiently. This provides the platform for the assessment of the components of nonverbal communication attached to the verbal communication. For instance, individuals might say that they are happy to be in certain locations while their facial expression fails to display their verbal substance. This makes it essential to align the verbal and nonverbal communication components with the intention of realising effectiveness and efficiency of the interaction between the sender and receiver of the information. Question 12: Value Assessment In the first instance, it is essential to note that I value philanthropy, generosity, and community, thus, the tendency to have time to offer service to others as one of my top values. Similarly, I have time for accountability, excellence, and positivity in pursuit of fair goals and objectives. From the above illustration, leadership is truly important to me since I tend to engage in the empowerment of other people. Individuals tend to engage in diverse practices; thus, the tendency to participate in trades before the closure of the market from any place in the world. Similarly, the essence of e-commerce has been essential in enhancing the influence of time in the information age (Bell & Smith, 2010). From this perspective, bidding on products such as house sale elaborates on the importance of time in which people engage in outbidding one another in the information age. Similarly, people focus on the acquisition of information faster and effectively from one hospital or health facility to another, thus, the influence of time in enhancing expectations of the target audiences in the information age. Information age provides the platform for individuals to make valuable decisions quickly in comparison to other communication mechanisms. Technological advancements aim at satisfying the time expectations of the target audiences seeking to communicate and make decisions faster in the digital or information age. Question 14: Nonverbal Communication Assumptions One of the critical assumptions of the nonverbal communication in the readings is the tendency of all body movements or communications having potential meaning in the communicative contexts. Similarly, communicators assume that behaviour can undergo analysis and interpretation in the midst of patterns, as well as repetitions, thus, the approach to integrate such mechanisms in the modern context (Bell & Smith, 2010). Thirdly, authors tend to make assumptions on the influence of the body motion in interaction as part of the social system with the intention of communicating effectively and efficiently. Additionally, nonverbal communication practitioners assume that individual’s visual bodily activity tends to influence others, thus, opportunity to generate and interpret meaning during the communication encounter. Another valuable assumption in the integration of nonverbal communication in readings is the possibility of examining and analysing communicative functions of the bodily activities in the midst of interaction. Finally, it is essential to demonstrate the fact person’s utilisation of the bodily activity tends to have unique aspects while being part of the entire social system in the presence of others. These explicit and implicit assumptions are essential in the course of making quality interpretations of the engagements or interactions under the influence of nonverbal communication in readings. Question 15: Business Meeting A sales report is probably the backbone of the business entity. In this context, it is appropriate to consider the execution of diverse interviews with the local media on the objective, mission, and vision of the new outlet in the area. The approach will be ideal in the maximisation of the revenues at the end of each fiscal period through enhancing understanding of the local consumers on the available products and services at their products. Good publicity will enable the company to go viral within the new area of operation, thus, the opportunity to gain acceptance of the local consumers regarding the products and services by our new company. Additionally, interviews with the local media will provide the platform for the organisation to utilise these outlets as advertising agencies to reach out to the new consumers across the town. Question 17: Management of Crisis When people do not know what to do in a crisis, various things happen. In the first instance, there tends to be confusion about the roles and expectations, as well as how to overcome the situation. From this perspective, there is need for effective and efficient planning among the practitioners before the occurrence of a crisis. Addressing probable challenges before the existence of the crisis will relate to appropriate planning on how to achieve the goal. This calls for the integration of a crisis communication plan, which organises information into diverse responsibilities and lines of communication before any event. The approach will enhance effectiveness through a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities for appropriate and swift response during a crisis. Appropriate planning will be ideal through the integration of crisis team members, contact information, meeting place, and designated spokesperson for efficiency in interaction during the crisis. From this perspective, people will have the ability and potentiality to understand what to do, as well as how to execute their expectations or obligation. The approach will limit the implications of the crisis while reducing room for confusion in handling the situation. Question 18: Self-disclosure Self-disclosure refers to the process of communication in which an individual engages in revealing information about him or her to another person. In most cases, the information might be descriptive or evaluative, thus, incorporates thoughts, feelings, goals, failures, aspirations, dreams, fears, and successes. In other instances, it is possible to generate likes, favourites, and dislikes in such communication platforms. In the modern context, business entities have the ability and potentiality to utilise self-disclosure in the course of building trust. From this perspective, skilful self-disclosure must relate to determination of the most appropriate substance, as well as processes of revelations inclusive of the breadth, depth, and timing. Skilful self-disclosure will enable employees to generate information relevant to the thinking process of other workers, thus, the platform for the creation of a shared mental model. The model will contribute to the growth and development of the organisation through enabling quality communication and task performance among the employees. Similarly, the approach will play a critical role in humanising the leader while creating connections between the management and other employees through increased feelings of intimacy and trust. On the other hand, compromising management style provides the opportunity for the conflicting parties or individuals to demonstrate medium assertiveness and cooperation in pursuit of a workable solution. From the above illustration, I would consider adopting compromising and collaborating conflict management styles or strategies demonstrating the influence of mediation in the workplace. The effectiveness and efficiency of such tools are evident in the maintenance of the relationship among the employees seeking to pursue collective goals and targets. Question 21: Theory of X, Y and Z Management While working as the manager in charge of approximately a dozen workers, it is appropriate to make a valuable decision regarding the most effective management style from the theory X, Y, or Z approaches. In this context, I will consider the utilisation of Theory Z management style, which will focus on the culture of the entire organisation, as well as the influence of culture in the management of the organisation. This management theory or approach translates to increased confidence in the employees for the realisation of the goals and targets of the participative management approach. Similarly, the employees will have the opportunity to improve their understanding and knowledge on various issues of the company, as well as valuable competence in making the decisions concerning the operations and functioning of the firm. Additionally, this theoretical perspective of management will stress on the essence of enabling employees to operate as generalists rather than specialists towards increasing their knowledge of the company. The employees will improve their understanding of the concepts and issues of the company through aspects such as job rotations and continual training. The employees will have the opportunity to experience longer training periods while learning the intricacies of the institution’s operations. Question 22: Overseas Assignment The executing overseas assignment might be a challenging experience because of diverse factors. For me, the most challenging or hardest aspect of the overseas assignment is the cultural barrier. Individuals tend to have different cultures across the world. Culture plays a critical role in the determination of how individuals communicate or interact in diverse occasions such as business meetings. Similarly, culture determines how individuals engage or interact with their seniors in the business context. From this perspective, I will find it difficult to adapt to the new culture because of the differences in the interpretation of the nonverbal communication attributes. Diversity in culture translates to the differences in the interpretations of such attitudes, facial expression, and body movements. Furthermore, cultural diversity might associate with a different language of communication limiting my ability and expertise to communicate effectively with the target audiences. On the other hand, I would find it easier to adapt to the organisational or business settings in the course of executing the overseas assignment. This is because of the formality of such activities; thus, the platform to learn on the working with the assumption that the workplace is friendly. I am always eager to learn. This will provide the opportunity to utilise formal avenues to learn about my expectations and duties, thus, the tendency to deliver in agreement with the responsibilities.
