Social & Environmental Context of Command Student’s Name: Institutional Affiliation: University: Social & Environmental Context of Command Leadership Leadership refers to the in which a person uses social influence to gain the support of other people in the society so as to accomplish a given task. Leadership is one of the hardest concepts that most of the people in the current world are stranding to obtain. Being in a position to lead others is a very prestigious position that most people in the current world admire. For this reasons, most of the leaders that are ruling over people are not genuine leaders. Most of the current leaders in the world today have used odd means to acquire the leadership title (Alderson, 2003). This is mainly because of the leadership advantages that are usually powerful. To obtain leadership qualities implies that one is able to control others. This is what most people admire about leadership. However, the leadership qualities are not just obtained but are worked hard for by the aspiring leaders. Before being able to be selected as a leader there are various qualities that the aspiring candidate should posses. Most of these qualities are usually obtained through training and learning. Not all people are born to become leaders; other people have to undertake leadership training for them to be able to lead others. A keen study of the leaders in all over the world and their qualities indicate that the leadership is not an easy task to be accomplished. For one to be a good leader and lead other people to the expected limits, there are qualities that are vital. As stated earlier, these qualities might be obtained naturally or through training. For one to be referred to as a good leader, he or she must have qualities that actually satisfy the people needs (Taylor & Rosenbach, 2008). The needs of the people, and the demands that are forwarded by the people, are the first aspects to be considered. Even though one can posses the qualities of a good leader, he or she must be able to exercise these qualities. This is basing on the fact that leadership should always be exercised. Unlike other professions, leadership should be embraced and work hard for to ensure that the people plies are adhered (McCulloch, 2003). Most of the leaders exercise their leadership qualities by harassing others. In most communities, leaders use the power they posses to mistreat the less fortunate. This is an example of a leader who uses the power in hand to mistreat other human beings. For this reason, not all the leaders use their power to rule others. In fact, in the current world, most of the leaders use the power that they posses to ensure that they mistreat the poor. This is referred to as bad leadership whereby the leader uses all the entities available to oppress the poor. For instance, Adolf Hitler who once ruled Germany used the leadership he had to oppress others. When Adolf Hitler obtained power through force, he mistreated the less fortunate in the community. He used the power and the leadership qualities that he posses to ensure that the poor in the community were destroyed. According to Hitler, all the poor people were to be killed and even thrown out of Germany. This is for the key reason that Hitler assumed that it was because of laziness that the poor people could not become rich. Hitler only wanted to associate with the rich people in the society (Crowther & Cooper, 2002). Although Hitler ruled Germany for quite a long period of time, the citizens of Germany endured hardship. The Germanys lacked freedom of speech and movement. They were restricted to rules and regulations that actually made them behave like slaves. Although most of the citizens voted for Hitler as president, most of the people later regretted the move. Hitler turned into a dictator who only thought about his own being. He ensured that he used the power at hand to gain his own selfish needs. Hitler acquired riches and other posses including resources which he mostly grabbed from other people. In all history, Adolf Hitler is usually referred as a dictator and is usually given reference to as one of the bad leaders. However, there are examples of other exemplary good leaders who used their power and qualities to ensure that the people obtained good treatment and lifestyle. For instance Abraham Lincoln and Mahatma Gandhi are examples of good leaders. Although the two leaders also had equivalent power to that of Adolf Hitler, they used the power at hand to ensure that people receive fair treatment. For instance, President Abraham Lincoln used the power that he posses to ensure that all the people received fair treatment (Laver & Mathews, 2008). Even though he was elected while slavery was still in process, Abraham Lincoln ensured that the act came into a halt. This is basing on the fact that he disliked the manner in which people were oppressed. According to Licoln, the act of buying and selling the human beings really pissed him off. He could not withstand people being traded and used for hardship. Even though the slaves were used to work for America which he was the president, Lincoln decided to stop the act. This is actually an example of one of the good leaders of all times. The discussion of the two leaders indicates that leadership is a virtue which might also be obtained as a gift. Some of the world’s famous leaders have never undergone training but have emerged as the best leaders. This is unlike the current leaders who only want to poses power for their own benefit. For this reason there are various different qualities that are used to determine a good leader. Key Factors That Gave Rise to Leadership Integrity A good leader should always be straightforward and indicate a vision of openness to the other members of the community. A leader should always be in a position to inform the other members of the community about the truth. Without giving a clear picture of the actual happening, a leader might be judged as being a bad leader (Rodman & Kissinger, 2010). In all situations, a leader should be able to give full details to the public of the happening. This is also vital since the local members of the community in most cases elect the leader. The leader should express all the inner feelings to the subjects who are usually the other members of the community. Even when angry, the leaders should be able to control their temper but show it to the people. Some leaders hide their true and real characters because of the fear of public. This is very conceptual since the people might not know the impact of their action to the leader. As a good leader, the truth in all the circumstances should be carefully revealed out to the other members of the community. A leader with integrity is usually the same from the inside feelings and the outward looks. Some leaders pretend from the outward to be pleased with some actions. This is totally wrong especially when it comes to making tough decisions. A leader should always try to give the real reaction rather than hide the truth. Most leaders who die from stress and stroke usually hide their emotions which usually cause diseases which later affect their own lives (Suchenwirth, 2005). Dedication A leader should always be dedicated to the entire society and to assisting other to achieve in whatever they aspire. Before being elected as a leader, there are usually various objectives that the leader should accept to fulfill. Before being elected, the aspiring candidates usually make various promises to the other members of the community. This is usually done for the key reason of encouraging the other people to voting to the candidate. Most of the leaders are usually elected because of the reasons that they provide for the local citizens. However, after the leaders are elected and they obtain the seats aspired, they usually forget the different promises that were promised to the people. This is a good example of a poor leader that actually does not mind about others. Such a leader should be ejected from power and even punished if possible. A leader should always remain dedicated and achieve the expected promises made. A dedicated leader usually makes the people who elected him or her proud. This is usually because such a leader usually uses all means to ensure that all the aspiration is achieved (Stanton, Baber & Harris, 2008). Ability to make decisions One of the key aspects that actually determines if a leader is a good or bad leader is the fact is the fact if the leader is able to make sober decisions in difficult times or not. For one to be able to become a good leader, he or she should be able to make firm decisions even when in pressure. For one to be able to make sober decisions in most difficult times, he or she might need to consult other people. Most decisions that are made when one is under pressure might be very risky. For this reason, a good leader usually seeks help especially from other leaders or elders. The ability to make decisions is not only achieved when a leader is able to make a choice but a right one. Almost all the leaders are capable of making different choices. But what matters most is the type of decision made and how it affects the other people. This type of choice made is what differentiates a good leader from a bad leader (Walker, Stanton & Slamon, 2009). Motivator A leader is supposed to be a person who uses his or her power to ensure that the other members of the community are comfortable. This is usually achieved when the leader uses all the resources readily available to ensure that people receive their desires. Leaders also associate with other society members to ensure that the community is able to acquire all the resources. As a leader, all the members of a community or association should be able to emulate the leadership qualities. This is vital since most of the decisions that are made in the community are usually indirectly representing the leader’s quality (Blair, 2006). A leader should be able to motivate the other members of the society to work hard. There are diverse motivation tips that a leader can use to ensure that he or she gives good direction to the other family members. A leader might decide to award all the good members of the community. This will encourage the other members of the community to also participate in doing good to receive the award. Through motivation, the leader will also be encouraging the members of the society to live in unity and harmony. Commander A commander is a leader who has a mandate over others and is able to give instructions to others so that a particular mission is accomplished. A good commander usually uses his or her position to give orders that actually gain the entire team. In the military or the police force a commander is one who gives orders to the other team members. The instructions that are given by a commander are to be strictly adhered to the latter. In the military, anyone who goes against the instructions of a commander is usually punished. The punishment might be in a form of manual work or restriction from certain areas in the barracks (Travers, 2002). Moreover, disobedience of the orders given by the commander signifies rudeness and ignorance. In other nations such as Germany and Britain, a police or a military that refuses to follow the orders is usually ejected from the military. This is usually even worse if the act of disobedience actually took place in the fighting field. The police or military might even get shot or killed because of refusing to follow the commander’s instructions. For this reasons, the orders given by the commanders are usually adhered to because they represent the president’s orders. In most nations, the president is usually represented by the commander. The commander is usually in charge of the armed forces which are headed by the president. For this reasons, if the commander gives instructions, the instructions might strictly be followed since they represent the laws of a nation (McFee, 2005). There are several qualities that a person should obtain for him or her to be able to be assigned the position of a commander. This majorly depends on the personal attributes and skills that are obtained from the training. Unlike leaders, commander is usually trained to ensure that they meet the required expectations. A commander should be able to fight and also defend better as compared to the other people. This is because in case there is war and the commander is left alone, he or she will have to fight and defend himself. Therefore, a soldier must have execrated attributes for him or her to be appointed as a commander. The power that the commander possesses usually makes it to be very easier for him or her to be able to rule over the others. After attaining the title of a commander, usually uses all the necessary material at hand to ensure that the duties and roles are well done. Participation of the commander in the war fields usually makes it simple for the soldiers to attack and fight. Soldiers are only supposed to fight according to the directions given by the commander (Weinberger & Schweizer, 2005). When a commander gives instruction to fire the guns, all soldiers are to adhere to the command. This also applies when the commander orders the soldiers to stop fighting. The commander is usually given the power to have control over the other subjects. This power enables the person to make specific decisions that might affect the life of the soldiers or police. However, not all the people who have being granted the power and mandate in the army can carry out certain objectives in the army. Other commanders are usually given the rank of a commander but are not given the power to rule over others (Lehman, 2005). This is why in a barracks, there are numerous commanders but only a small section is able to give commands to the other soldiers or police officers. There are various qualities that are to be identified in a soldier for him or she to be attained the position of a commander. The attributes must be in cooperated with trained skilled to ensure that the soldier is able to perform duties as a commander. Not all the soldiers that are appointed as commanders are able to give orders and instructions to the other soldiers. This is mainly because some soldiers usually have the qualities of dictatorship in them. One of the worst mistakes that can be made in a camp is to give a dictator the powers of being a commander. Most commanders that are dictators usually cause war and controversy in barracks and even wars (Taylor, 2003). This is because the orders and regulations that are given to the soldiers are usually for their own selfish gain. Therefore, before one is assigned the position of a commander, he or she must attain the following attributes; Personal qualities Personal qualities refer to the character traits of a person depending on the type of duty or roles that the individual performs. A good commander should be able to have exemplary characters that ensure that he or she is able to rule in a proper manner. The personal qualities usually enable a person to get along better in a new position. Without good personal attributes one cannot be able to complete certain duties in a required manner. This is because he or she will be unable to coordinate and interact freely with people. Most of the people that are given the position of a commander are usually of good characters. There are various attributes that a soldier should have before being granted the position of a commander. One of the main attribute that is considered is honesty. All commanders should be honest and give a true picture to the other soldiers in a camp. Even though they are higher in rank than the other soldiers and policemen, commander are supposed to be honest (Horn & Walker, 2008). For instance, in a war situation, if a commander does not provide a true picture of the situation at hand, the soldiers might be defeated. Another key attribute that is considered before a soldier can be attained the position of a commander is the quality of leadership. All the soldiers in a barrack can qualify and even be capable of attaining the position of a commander. However, without the virtue of leadership which is mainly to lead others, one cannot attain the position. Leadership qualities are being capable of ruling others on a fair and free ground. Most soldiers because of the tough training and hardship fail to posses the quality of a good leadership. A leader is someone who is able to rule others and persuade others so that they can work together as a team. A good leader also ensures that members of his or her team are able to perform the required duties and roles to the expected levels. This is through motivation and encouraging others to give better results. Training Training is a process that is usually undertaken to change the character traits and knowledge of a person to some level. Training is also very vital especially in the military and the police force since it enables the change in character and skills. For one to be a good commander, he or she must undergo through certain training and modification. A commander must be able to successfully undergo specific training to be able to acquire some given qualities (Suchenwirth, 2005). Training usually enables the commander to be able to perform some specified duties and also to give specified regulations to the soldiers. Without undergoing training, commander cannot accomplish the required tasks that he or she is supposed to order. For instance, the commander must be trained the signs language which enables the soldiers to attack effectively in wars. Specialist skills The specialized skills refers to the skills that the military or police officers usually obtain before they are attained the commander position. After attaining the position of a soldier, most of the soldiers usually proceed with training to obtain their desired extra skills. Some of the most required specialized skills that are required for one to become a commander are the operational skills. Operational and managing skills are usually obtained in training that those aspiring to become soldiers usually undertake. It is a three years course that the soldiers usually attend to ensure they obtain the required skills to be able to command (Pois & Langer, 2004). Professional experience Professional experience usually refers to the skills that a soldier has obtained after working for several years in the army. When a person works for a very long period of time in a particular are certain fields, he or she usually acquire various different extra skills that cannot even be taught. For this reason, the number of years that a person has served as an army also matters a lot if at all the individual would like to become a commander (Lyons, 2002). Therefore, the number of years that a soldier has served as a soldier in the army usually determines if the person is able to rule others. Professional experience unlike the specialize skills is usually acquired from the number of years a soldier has served in the army. For instance, I am aspirin to become a major which requires professional experience not less than nine years working in the military barracks. Command styles A command teaching style that usually encompass of practical lessons for the main reason of enabling the student to master the objective of the lesson. The command teaching style is usually vital since it enables the commanders to be able to get the actual picture of the lesson being taught. The command teaching style also enables the soldiers to be able to give vivid examples of the actual practice that are usually undertaken in the field (Paton, 2003). The command teaching styles encompass of directive, collaborative and Delegatory. The directive styles encompass of the direct teaching whereby the soldiers are taken to a plan field and given a situation to solve. This is usually very easy to learn since the most technique to be acquired is mastering the commanding technique. The collaborative technique is also another command teaching style that involves learning ideas from another person. Most commanders that are taught by other commanders usually obtain various skills that are very beneficial. This is also one of the most preferred ways that new commanders should obtain new skills in giving orders. Delegatory is usually the assignment that the soldiers are given by the commanders in charge to give commands for a certain period of time. Soldiers are usually given this opportunity to be able to take the role of the commander in giving out orders (Flin, 2003). Reference Alderson, J. (2003). Police leadership: A search for principles.
